The Eight Essentials of the Consciousness-Only School, compiled by the eminent Ming dynasty monk Hong En, is a key introductory text for the Faxiang (Dharma Character) and Consciousness-Only traditions. This work brings together eight crucial treatises, including the *Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only* and the *Verses on the Eight Consciousnesses*, systematically expounding core doctrines such as "all phenomena are consciousness-only," the dependent arising from the ālaya-vijñāna, and the interaction of seeds and their manifestations. Compiled during the revival of Consciousness-Only studies in the Ming dynasty, it provided scholars with a clear and concise path for study. As a programmatic collection for the Consciousness-Only school, this work not only promoted the spread and research of the tradition in China but remains an indispensable foundational classic for Buddhist practice and the study of Consciousness-Only thought to this day.
