### 廬州延昌寺凞詠禪師

問。少林面壁。意旨如何。

師云。慚惶殺人。

師乃云。衲僧家直須橫身宇宙。裂破面門。把住放行。總由遮裡。放行也。千花競秀。萬木迎春。把住也。水泄不通。纖塵不立。且道山僧為人在什麼處。良久。云。可知禮也。

> The Master said: "A monk must boldly stand tall in the universe, tearing through the veil of appearances. Whether to hold firm or let go—it all comes down to this. When letting go, a thousand flowers bloom in competition, and ten thousand trees welcome the spring. When holding firm, not even a drop of water can pass through, and not even a speck of dust can settle. But tell me, where does this mountain monk truly help others?" After a long pause, he said: "You should know the proper way."
