Great Being Treatise (大丈夫論)

Chapter 2: The Superior Taste of Giving

能令一切眾, 悉皆得安樂;

Giving arises from great compassion, The wish fulfilled becomes enlightenment. Those who see and know in this way, Can accomplish all forms of giving. All such giving, in the end, Merges into the single taste of wisdom.

With great compassion as the essence, Various acts of giving arise, Saving beings in countless ways, Leading them to the place of wisdom. It removes the bonds of craving, And the stains of ignorance, Bringing all beings, Complete peace and joy. When giving springs from such compassion, Who would not delight in it?

Giving born of great compassion, Brings merit and benefit. If one does not delight in it, One turns away from rescue. Such a person is bound by attachment, And enlightenment is hard to attain. Those who seek Buddhahood, Savor the sweet taste of giving.

The wise rejoice in giving, Relishing the flavor of enlightenment. Seeing deeply the faults of existence, They find the taste of nirvāṇa most joyful, And swiftly wish to depart, Not dwelling even for a moment.

Yet they also see the joy of giving, As surpassing even nirvāṇa. Delighting in the freedom of giving, The mind forgets enlightenment. When the mind forgets enlightenment, It thinks enlightenment is hard to reach.

Observing their own joy in giving, Arising from compassion for beings, They do not notice the sweetness of giving, For giving has three joyful tastes:

First, the taste of seeking reward from giving; second, the taste of seeking liberation through giving; third, the taste of seeking the great compassionate mind through giving. These three tastes are known as the giving that increases the flavor of joy.
