### 大丈夫品第二十二

菩薩悲心唯有一事之所逼迫，常為他事苦來逼迫，更無餘事，是名成就悲聚。棄於涅槃如棄其苦，受於有身如取解脫，與世間利樂者名此為悲。知涅槃功德生死過患然不捨有為，如是一切盡是大悲功德。一切處離欲，以涅槃為體而不取涅槃，名勇健者。大悲因緣故，能入生死周旋往返，觀諸有盡滅，知眾生是苦，為救為依，心持大悲，厭惡己身求十力身，大悲之處得處悲處功德。如轉輪聖王雖有千子，然愛相好具者；佛亦如是，於一切眾生愛有悲心者。唯能作福無智無悲名為丈夫，有福有智名善丈夫，若修福修悲修智名大丈夫。應看悲者，有悲者應共語說，敬禮悲者具一切功德。

> The compassionate heart of a Bodhisattva is driven by only one pressing concern: the constant suffering brought about by the affairs of others. There is nothing else. This is known as the accumulation of compassion. To abandon Nirvana as if it were a burden of suffering, and to accept existence in a body as if it were liberation—this is what is called compassion, which brings benefit and joy to the world. Knowing the virtues of Nirvana and the faults of birth and death, yet not abandoning the conditioned world—all of this is the virtue of great compassion. Detached from all desires, with Nirvana as one's essence, yet not seizing Nirvana—such a person is called a courageous one. Through the conditions of great compassion, one enters the cycle of birth and death, going round and round, observing the extinction of all existences, knowing that sentient beings are suffering. To rescue them and to be their refuge, one holds great compassion in mind, feels disgust for one's own body, and seeks the body of the Ten Powers. The place of great compassion is where the virtue of compassion resides. Just as a wheel-turning sacred king, though he has a thousand sons, loves those with good marks and qualities most, so too does the Buddha cherish all sentient beings with a compassionate heart. Those who only create merit but lack wisdom and compassion are called mere men. Those with both merit and wisdom are called good men. Those who cultivate merit, compassion, and wisdom are called great men. One should look upon those with compassion, converse with those who have compassion, and pay respect to the compassionate, for they possess all virtues.
