### 嘉興金粟石菴行琈禪師

> Master Xingfu of Jinsu Stone Hut in Jiaxing

崑山楊氏子　解制上堂拈拄杖卓一卓曰。明明無結。何處有解。諸人向者裏明得透得。不起一念心。照察十世古今。不動一步脚。歷徧百億神洲。碎須彌為芥子。散空界作微塵。機不停位。用不停玄。驅牯牛於欄外。曳占波於西瞿。直得五湖四海。同歸皇化。百千日月。不離者裏。大眾且道。正恁麼時。解制一句。作麼生道。春山青。春水碧。芒鞵踏斷萬重山。觸破指頭心便息。喝一喝。卓拄杖。下座問。如何是諸佛出身處。師曰。吳王臺畔石嶙峋。曰學人不會。師曰。橫看成嶺側成峯。

> A native of Kunshan, surnamed Yang, ascended the hall for the end of the summer retreat. He raised his staff and struck once, saying, "Clearly, there is nothing to bind—where then is there anything to release? If you can see through this clearly, without a single thought arising, you will illuminate the ten directions and all of past and present. Without moving a single step, you will traverse hundreds of billions of worlds. Crush Mount Sumeru into a mustard seed; scatter the vast realm into dust motes. The function never rests, the mystery never halts. Drive the ox beyond the pen; pull the wave across the western continent. Thus, all the rivers and seas return to one sovereign transformation; a hundred thousand suns and moons do not depart from this very place. Great assembly, tell me—at this very moment, what is the word for the ending of the retreat? The spring mountains are green, the spring waters azure. Straw sandals have trodden through countless peaks; when the toe breaks through, the mind naturally ceases." He shouted once, struck the staff, and descended from the seat. A monk asked, "What is the place where all Buddhas arise?" The master said, "By the terrace of King Wu, the rocks stand rugged." The monk said, "I do not understand." The master said, "Viewed horizontally, it's a ridge; seen from the side, a peak."
