### 嘉興金粟天岸昇禪師

> Master Tian'an Sheng of Jinsu Temple, Jiaxing

金壇陳氏子。弱冠。從姚江高原薙染。謁天童忞圓具。參那吒析骨因緣。有省。作華嚴五十三頌呈忞。忞稱善。後繼席青州大覺。及忞奉詔入京。舉師立僧。後遷金粟　上堂。收得蕙江雲。滿載剡溪月。跨鶴度錢塘。賽彩雙白璧。描也描不成。畫也畫不出。佛手驢脚與生緣。趙州輸勝不輸劣。阿呵呵。饅頭䭔子齊拈出。餐則任君餐。切忌齩破舌。金牛大笑君何拙　上堂。㵎水繞山房。白雲抱幽石。此時林下人。活計天然別。却怪德山臨濟。星布碁列。摝蜆撈蝦。竪拳行喝。好與捉來。朝打三千。暮打八百。因甚如此。清平世界。不容草竊。師寂於康熙癸丑十一月二十四。全身塔於姚江栖雲之右麓。

> The teacher was a native of Jintan, from the Chen family. At twenty years old, he left home under Master Gaoyuan at Yaojiang. He later visited Tiantong, where he received full ordination under Master Min. While contemplating the story of Nazha breaking apart his bones to return them to his father, he had an awakening. He composed fifty-three verses on the Avatamsaka Sutra and presented them to Master Min, who praised them highly. Afterwards, he succeeded to the abbotship at Qingzhou Dajue Monastery. When Master Min was summoned to the capital by imperial decree, he recommended that the teacher serve as the head monk. Later, the teacher moved to Jinsu. At one sermon, he said: "I gathered the clouds of Huijiang, filled my boat with the moonlight of Shanxi. Riding a crane across the Qiantang River, I carried twin white jade discs in tribute. They cannot be depicted, nor painted. The Buddha's hand, the donkey's foot, and the conditions of birth—Zhaozhou wins by not losing. Ah ha ha! Steamed buns and dumplings are offered together. Eat if you wish, but be careful not to bite your tongue. The golden ox laughs and says, 'How clumsy you are!'" At another sermon, he said: "The mountain stream encircles the hermitage, white clouds embrace the secluded rocks. At such times, those who dwell in the forest lead lives that are uniquely natural. Yet strange are Deshan and Linji—arrayed like stars and chess pieces, they rake for clams and scoop for shrimp, raising fists and shouting. If I caught them, I would strike them three thousand times in the morning and eight hundred in the evening. Why is this so? In a world of peace and clarity, there is no room for petty thieves." The master passed away on the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month in the year of Guichou during the Kangxi reign. His complete relic stupa was built on the right slope of Qiyun Mountain at Yaojiang.
