> Chan Master Ganxiu Qian of Xingfu Temple, Xi'an

> The master from Western Shu, a son of the Hu family, ascended the hall and said: Three times he struck with the staff—the old Venerable Huangbo, with utmost compassion. A fist under the ribs—the young servant, acting out of urgency. Displaying great function, unleashing great potential. Meeting clearly, meeting darkly. Seizing and releasing, interchanging. Illuminating and responding, both shining forth. Hiding the body within the Big Dipper, galloping on the tip of a needle. At this point, old Shakyamuni's mouth is like a millstone, and Bodhidharma's eyes are like wooden stumps. The ten sages and three worthies find no way to praise. Sentient beings and demons harbor endless doubt and slander. Only an adept transcendent master, a sharp-eyed monk, can directly understand—no need for clues. Striking the jade drum in daylight, unfurling the iron flag in darkness. Wherever one goes, grass bows and wind follows; whatever one faces, all submit without thought. This is precisely what is meant by: "Zhong Kui, drunk, sings Liangzhou; his little sister nods secretly at the door. After meeting the sea-patrolling yaksha, all clap hands and ascend the high tower." At the beginning of the retreat, he ascended the hall and said: The old fire stove of Vajra Rice—its depth and breadth are immeasurable. One path, originally equal; saints and ordinary beings, fundamentally no different. When sparks are struck out, the whole void shatters. When cold, the whole world is cold; when hot, the whole world is hot. The Buddhas of the three times turn the great wheel of Dharma within the flames—never against it. All of you, sitting, lying, or walking here today, just throw aside completely the "three pounds of hemp" and the "dried shit-stick." None of it concerns you. But as for not allowing drowsiness or dozing—if you doze off, your eyebrows will be singed by the fire. And you can't blame Vajra Rice for that.
