### 蘄州後山白巖鐵菴清禪師

> Zen Master Qing of Tie'an (Iron Hermitage) at Baiyan, Houshan Mountain, Qizhou

上堂。牢關把定。語默難通。祖令親行。情思頓絕。果肯全身放下。從他月照寒潭。若得伎倆消融。誰道雲生室內。到者裏。雖則萬機休罷。千聖不携。若教白巖撿點。正是髑髏前妄想。陰山下活計。要得入林不動草。入水不動波。除非別有生涯始得。顧左右曰。眾中莫有恁麼人麼。饒你八面四方。總被山僧拂子穿却鼻孔　小參。明明百草頭。明明祖師意。直下便承當。又落第二義。且作麼生是第一義。拈拄杖卓一下云。寧可截舌。不犯國諱。

> The master ascended the hall and said: "The gate is firmly sealed; neither words nor silence can pass through. The ancestral decree is personally carried out; all emotional thoughts are instantly cut off. If one truly lets go of everything, let the moonlight shine upon the cold pond. If all clever tricks dissolve away, who says clouds arise within the room? To reach this point, though all activities cease and a thousand sages are not brought along, if I, Baiyan, were to examine this closely, it would still be delusion before a skull—a livelihood beneath the shadowy mountain. If you wish to enter the forest without stirring the grass, or enter the water without moving the waves, unless you have another way of living, it cannot be done." He looked around and said, "Is there anyone in the assembly who can do this? Even if you can respond in all directions, this old monk's whisk will pierce through your nostrils." In a small assembly, he said: "Clearly, atop the hundred grasses; clearly, the ancestral masters' intent. If you understand it directly, you fall into the second meaning. So what then is the first meaning?" He raised his staff and struck the ground once, saying, "Better to cut out one's tongue than to offend the ruler's taboo."
