> Chan Master Liang of Chongfu Temple, Daxiong Mountain, Qiantang

> A native of the Guo family in Anfuyuan, Jiangxi. At the age of eight, he took refuge under Master Tengyan and had his head shaved. At nineteen, he received the precepts at Mount Longxu in Ji'an. He then traveled widely to various teachers, but found none who fully satisfied him. Hearing that the training at Gaomin was exceptionally rigorous, he went there to study and attained the essence. Later, he withdrew to seclusion in the Wumen area, having no intention of teaching publicly. His fellow disciple, Master Pei, earnestly persuaded him to come out of retirement and take up the abbotship of Chongfu Monastery. At the end of the summer retreat, he addressed the assembly: "Rivers and seas move onward—how could they linger among the fragrant waterweeds? Clouds and stars soar high—they do not stoop to drink from the clear streams. The only concern is not being true jade; if it truly is jade, how marvelous! Thirty years ago at Chongfu, the old farmers sang in the fields, and the fishermen knew their roosting nests. Thirty years later, it is no longer so. Why? Ants naturally go where it smells of fish." He also said: "Where others walk, I do not walk. Where others dwell, I do not dwell. It is not that I refuse to share their company, but from the outset, black and white must be clearly distinguished. In former days, when I carried my pack, I wandered out half-aware. I encountered a man with no nostrils, and he added another load of confusion to my burden. I bumped here, clashed there, until suddenly the bottom of the bucket fell out—then I realized that the boy Sudhana had always been studying the Heart Sutra without ever knowing the first stroke of the character 'yuan.' Now, thinking it over carefully, there remains one difficulty. Tell me—what is that difficulty?" He shook his hand and said: "I won't say. I won't say."
