### 揚州遯園尤居士

> Venerable Layman You of Dunyuan, Yangzhou

未弱冠入泮。不信佛氏。每見僧心若有物。忽舌下患一重舌。醫皆拱手。自知必死。聞秋門居士知坐禪。可了生死。往扣之。門一見。即推出仍閉却。士大疑之。遂詣高旻。令參神前酒臺盤話。日夜參究。誓不歸。未幾。病釋然。一日欲登廁未及門。忽猛省曰。從今不受人瞞也。即趨方丈。呈偈曰。酒臺盤酒臺盤。答處何曾在問端。大道本來無背向。從今不被舌頭瞞。旻為之助喜。

> Before the age of twenty, I entered the local school. I did not believe in Buddhism. Whenever I saw a monk, something stirred in my heart. Suddenly, a second tongue grew beneath my tongue. All the doctors threw up their hands. I knew I was going to die. I heard that Layman Qiumen knew how to sit in meditation and could transcend birth and death. I went to seek his guidance. As soon as the gate opened, he pushed me out and shut it again. I was deeply puzzled. So I went to Gaomin Monastery and was told to investigate the koan "the wine tray before the altar." Day and night I investigated it, vowing not to return home. Before long, my illness cleared up. One day, as I was about to go to the toilet and hadn't yet reached the door, I suddenly had a great awakening and said, "From now on, I will not be deceived by anyone." I immediately rushed to the abbot's quarters and presented a verse: The wine tray, the wine tray— The answer was never in the question. The Great Way has no direction at all. From now on, I will not be fooled by tongues. The master at Gaomin congratulated me with joy.
