*Palmistry: A Glimpse of Destiny* is traditionally attributed to the Tang Dynasty eminent monk, Master Yixing. Master Yixing was a renowned astronomer and an accomplished master of Esoteric Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty, deeply revered by the imperial court. This work emerged during the peak of Tang Dynasty Buddhist culture, blending Buddhist concepts of karma with traditional fortune-telling theories. It primarily infers an individual's fate and personality traits through physical characteristics such as palm lines. The text emphasizes that all phenomena arise from consciousness—that destiny is not fixed but closely linked to one's actions and state of mind, reflecting the Buddhist view of karma. As a unique Buddhist divination text, *Palmistry: A Glimpse of Destiny* holds a special place in Buddhist history. While not an orthodox Buddhist scripture, it illustrates the integration of Buddhism with indigenous Chinese culture during its spread, offering valuable insights into the study of Buddhism's Sinicization.

Palmistry of Destiny

The Venerable Monk Yixing of the Tang Dynasty said: All those who seek a teacher to leave home and become monastics must follow this "Diagram for Selecting Monastics" for application. Only those who possess one or two recognitions are permitted to leave home. Those who have none at all will instead slander this teaching, misinterpreting the sacred words of the Buddha, understanding only immediate matters without knowing the final outcome. All ten recognitions are predetermined from past lives. If one lacks even one or two recognitions, their karmic roots are deep and heavy, and they cannot be liberated—except for those of extraordinary character, who stand out uniquely among the masses and are not subject to this discussion.

The method for observing the ten recognitions: Begin from the year to find the month. The method of the palm diagram: Start from the year to ascend to the month, from the month to ascend to the day, and from the day to ascend to the hour. The second calculation: Start from the year to ascend to the month, from the month to ascend to the day, and from the day to ascend to the hour. The third calculation proceeds as before. For each calculation of the hour's movement or one-year cycle, the celestial star in the preceding position follows in sequence. Imitate this for each subsequent step. Each cycle lasts seven years. Annual fortunes begin from the position of the cycle and ascend through the stars to proceed. Monthly fortunes begin from the annual position and ascend through the stars to proceed. For men, follow the forward direction; for women, follow the reverse direction. Good and bad fortune can thus be verified.

經云十二宮中去復還惟有重疊走江山世間多少榮枯者盡在山僧一掌看。

The scripture says: Through the twelve palaces they come and go, Only to wander again over layered hills and rivers. How many in this world rise and fall— All are seen in this mountain monk’s single palm.
