Song of Mutual Support Between Samadhi and Wisdom
In the ancestral teachings of the School, there are two gates; The Ten Perfections and myriad practices honor them as foremost. The first is Calm-and-Insight, aiding the beginner; The latter perfects Samadhi and Wisdom, the root of Enlightenment. Though the Dharma is one, it appears as two: When reality is still, this is True Calm; In stillness, yet ever illuminating, the wondrous Insight remains. Samadhi is the father, Wisdom the mother, Giving birth to the gateway of a thousand sages. They nurture roots and powers, nourishing the holy embryo, Moment by moment, producing Buddhas and patriarchs. Samadhi is the general, Wisdom the minister, Able to assist the mind-king to attain the Unsurpassed. This is the eternal path of liberation for all beings, The very model of the ancient Buddhas' Enlightenment. Samadhi is like the moon's light, shining to extinguish the wrong stars of heretical views; It can lift the torch of wisdom, making it ever clearer, Watering the sprouts of the path and uprooting the tangles of desire. Wisdom is like the sun's light, breaking into the dark room of ignorance; It can transform the wrong views and foolish meditations of commoners Into the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajnaparamita). A moment of silence, an instant of stillness, Gradually cultivate to perfect Right Samadhi. Though the efforts compared to the saints may seem little, In the end, you will see the wondrous nature of the spiritual platform. A brief hearing of the Dharma, just passing through the ear, Can perfume the seed-consciousness and awaken good roots. With a single thought of turning the light within, true wisdom opens; In a moment, you realize Buddhahood—this is how it is. The power of meditative concentration (Dhyana) is inconceivable: In an instant, it transforms an ordinary person into a sage. The roots of endless birth-and-death are severed; The caverns of eons of karmic dust are demolished. The mind-water is clear, the mind-stillness is pure; Its light swallows myriad forms and shines through a thousand paths. Open your own eye—it has no blemish; The Triple Realm has never bound a single thing. The thieves of perception and contemplation are conquered in time; The illness of clinging suddenly becomes purified. Wash away the dust of defilements and confusion, Reveal the Dharma-body and solidify the life of wisdom. Like a mountain cut in two, like an ocean brought to stillness, Though heaven overturns and earth spins, it never changes. Clear as a crystal holding a jeweled moon, Suddenly it abides nowhere and waits for nothing. The Prajna Wisdom is immeasurable; Naturally, the mind-light appears everywhere. It is the leader within all practices, Called the Dharma King in every moment. It exhausts the ocean of suffering and smashes the mountain of wrong views; The clouds of false conceptions scatter in a single moment. Like the gold suddenly appearing in the poor woman's house, Like the pearl on the strong man's forehead returning unnoticed. Cut through the net of delusion, dam the stream of desire; The great hero is so mighty, none can compare. It can cool the iron bed and copper pillar, And in an instant, cause the karmic fruits of enemies and demons to cease. Harmonize disputes, bring forth filial piety and righteousness; The wisdom of all Buddhas appears universally for beings. Wrong views, mistaken wisdom, the biased—all return to the source; Ants and giant fish alike receive the prophecy of Buddhahood. If you cultivate only Samadhi, You become pure Yin, spoiling things and cutting off your true life. If you use right wisdom to shine on Dhyana, Naturally, all dharmas will be clear as a mirror. If you cultivate only Wisdom, You become pure Yang, drying up things and creating rigidity. You must rely on wondrous Samadhi to aid the gate of insight, Just as the moon clearly dissolves the fog. I urge you to study equally, do not practice one-sidedly; From the start, they are one substance, with no second head. They are like a bird's two wings flying in the realm of space, Like a cart's two wheels pulled by a white ox. Thus from the path of the ordinary, you climb the shore of awakening; Thus on the ocean of karma, you float the boat of compassion. Sometimes there is practical Samadhi— Focus the mind on one point, and nothing is unaccomplished. Sometimes there is principle Samadhi— Just directly observe the mind-nature. Sometimes there is practical Insight— Clearly discerning the characteristics of all dharmas, calculating them. Sometimes there is principle Insight— Suddenly realize there is nothing—not even that limit. Samadhi is Wisdom— Not one, not two, not a product of mental calculation. Wisdom is Samadhi— Not identical, not different, transcending perception and hearing. Sometimes they work together— Silence and illumination penetrate the true doctrine. Sometimes both are negated— No Samadhi, no Wisdom, they transcend the ordinary standard. One dust grain enters Samadhi, yet all dusts arise; In the gate of Prajna, this is the natural order. When a child's body enters Samadhi, An old man's body expounds the true principles. When you can contemplate one realm, you contemplate all realms; Near dust-heaps and far Buddhafields are all unobstructed. On the road of Suchness, they discuss birth and death; In the ocean of ignorance, they expound the perfect teaching. The eye faculty can perform the nose's Buddha-work; The form-dust enters Samadhi, and the scent-dust arises. The mind and its objects are always the same—it's the seeing that is wrong; Who says that without practice the wave is already water? Neither silent nor luminous—this cuts off words and thought; Yet silent and luminous—its merit is incomparable. Expedient and real walk together, revealing the true path, Entity and function aid each other, containing the wondrous meaning. I urge you, children, do not waste this life in vain; Time flies like an arrow, like flowing water. Distraction is entirely due to lacking the gate of Samadhi; Ignorance and blindness come only from a deficit of true Wisdom. True words must enter your ears; All sutras and treatises point to the same goal. Never for a moment forget the full work of Samadhi and Wisdom; With one thought, you return to the true realm of Awakening. Samadhi must be practiced, Wisdom must be heard; Do not let the spiritual platform be dimmed by even a trace. A tree that encircles your arms grows from a tiny sprout; The work of gradual accumulation becomes the precious treasure. A monkey learned Samadhi and was reborn in heaven; A young woman's single thought led her to enter the path. Benefiting yourself and others—causes and effects complete; Apart from Samadhi and Wisdom, nothing can be spoken.
