師於建炎二年六月十三日入院。上堂云。一塵起大地收。一花開天下春。衲僧變態。須是恁麼始得。便乃一切時一切處。任運自在。應用無方。諸人還委悉麼。風行草偃。水到渠成。
The Master entered the monastery on the thirteenth day of the sixth month in the second year of the Jianyan era. Ascending the hall, he said:
When a single speck of dust rises, the great earth gathers it. When a single flower blossoms, spring arrives across the world. For a monk to truly transform, it must be like this. Only then, in all times and all places, can one be completely at ease, functioning without limitation. Do you all understand this?
The wind blows, and the grass bends. The water flows, and the channel forms.
上堂云。好諸禪德。念盡智明。玉壺引步。神虛鑑遠。寶鏡含輝。應萬化而無當。不墮諸數。湛一真而獨照。不外餘塵。且作麼生。行履得恁麼相應去。良久云。翡翠踏翻荷葉雨。鷺鷥衝破竹林煙。
The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "Good practitioners of Chan! When thoughts are exhausted, wisdom becomes clear—like stepping gracefully from a jade vase. When the spirit is empty, insight reaches far—like a precious mirror radiating light. It responds to all transformations without attachment, not falling into any fixed category. It is tranquilly unified with true reality, shining alone, without excluding any dust of the world. So how should one act to attain such effortless accord?" After a long pause, he said: "An emerald kingfisher steps, overturning rain upon lotus leaves. An egret bursts through, shattering the mist among bamboo groves."
上堂舉僧問洞山。四山相逼時如何。山云。老僧日前。也曾向人家屋簷下過來。僧云。回顧。不回顧。山云。不回顧。僧云。未審。教渠向甚麼處去。山云。粟畬裡去。其僧珍重便遷化。山以拄杖點云。闍梨祇解恁麼去。不解恁麼來。師云。祇解恁麼去。沙禽夜宿滄洲樹。不解恁麼來。石笋穿開古路苔。諸人還體悉得麼。莫道鯤鯨無羽翼。今日親從鳥道回。
The master ascended the hall and cited a case: A monk asked Dongshan, “When the four mountains converge around me, what should I do?” Dongshan replied, “This old monk, in times past, once passed under someone else’s eaves.” The monk asked, “Should I look back or not?” Dongshan said, “Don’t look back.” The monk said, “If so, where should I go?” Dongshan answered, “Go into the millet field.” The monk bowed politely and passed away. Dongshan pointed with his staff and said, “Oh monk, you only know how to go—not how to come back.”
The master commented: “Only knowing how to go— The water birds roost by night in trees along the misty shore. Not knowing how to come back— Stone shoots break through moss on ancient paths.
Dear all, do you grasp this? Don’t say the giant whale lacks wings or feathers. Today, I myself have just returned along the path of birds.”
上堂云。淅淅西風斂氣浮。遠天野水一般秋。衲僧歇到茲時節。坐照寒光湛不流。諸禪德祖師道。心隨萬境轉。轉處實能幽。且作麼生是轉處。還會麼。解報山家六戶曉。須知雲樹一聲雞。
The master addressed the assembly:
“A crisp west wind settles the floating haze, Distant skies and wild waters share the same autumn. At this season, the monk rests, Sitting still in the cold light, clear and unmoving.
The patriarchs said: ‘The mind follows the ten thousand conditions, But in that turning, there is a hidden reality.’
So what exactly is this ‘turning point’? Can you see it?
If you can announce the dawn to six families in the mountain village, Know that it takes only one cock’s crow from behind the cloudy trees.”
真州天寧琳長老。下法嗣書。師上堂云。五葉一花。不是尋常春力。十方一色。何曾特地莊嚴。瑠璃地上轉機。明月堂前移步。正恁麼時。子有就父之功。資有合師之道。諸人還體悉得麼。良久云。玉籠放出千年鶴。妙辨初移一步時。
Elder Lin of Tianning Temple in Zhenzhou submitted his Dharma lineage letter. The Master took the high seat and said:
"One flower with five petals— this is no ordinary spring's work. One color across the ten directions— why would it need deliberate adornment? On a lapis lazuli ground, the mechanism turns. Before the hall of bright moon, the step shifts. At just such a time, the child fulfills the father's merit, the disciple aligns with the master's path.
Can all of you grasp this?"
After a long pause, he said:
"The cage of jade releases the thousand-year crane. The wondrous distinction makes its first move, just one step."
薦道士請。上堂云。恍恍惚惚其中有物。杳杳冥冥其中有精。其中之精則無像。其中之物則無名。應繁興而常寂。照空劫而獨靈。悟之者剎剎見佛。證之者塵塵出經。門戶開闢。也分而為三教。身心狹小。也局而為二乘。真境無涯兮妙觀玄覽。大方無外兮獨立周行。諸人還會麼。良久云。虛若谷神元不死。道先象帝自長生。
上堂舉。定上座參臨際問。如何是佛法的的大意。際下禪床。與一掌便托開。定佇思。傍僧云。定上座。何不禮拜。定方禮拜豁然大悟。師云。黃蘗傳來。臨際用底。定上座觸著關捩。廓然一念忘緣。泊爾十方無寄。現前不用安排。直下何勞擬議。不風流處也風流。有意氣時添意氣。
上堂舉洞山云。初秋夏末。或東或西。直須向萬里無寸草處去。良久云。祇如萬里無寸草處。又作麼生去。後僧舉問石霜。霜云。出門便是草。明安云。直是不出門。亦是草漫漫地。師云。出門是草。涉芊芊莽莽之閒。葉落知秋。墮黯黯青青之處。到者裏。須體取機雖轉紐。印未成文處始得。還端的麼。良久云。水明老蚌懷胎後。雲重蒼龍退骨時。
The Master entered the hall and said: "Dongshan once said, 'At the end of summer, when the first autumn breezes stir, whether you go east or west, you must go to a place where there is not a blade of grass for ten thousand miles.' After a long pause, he added, 'But what about that place itself? How do you go there?'
Later, a monk asked Shishuang about this, and Shishuang said, 'As soon as you step out the door, there is grass.'
Ming’an said, 'Even if you don't step out the door, the grass is still vast and boundless.'"
The Master then commented: "When you step out the door and find grass, you become entangled in a tangled wilderness. When a leaf falls, you know autumn has arrived—but only as you sink into dark, dense places. At this point, you must realize that though the mechanism may turn, the seal has yet to be impressed. Only then do you get it.
Is this the truth, or not?"
After a long pause, he said: "When the water is clear, the old clam conceives a pearl; when the clouds are heavy, the azure dragon sheds its bones."
