> With the Chan Practitioner Man from Fuzhou

而今別後記丁寧。 曹洞家風句未形。 月滿鳳林寒不夢。年深龜殼灼猶靈。 沈沈莫觸蛇頭毒。的的須明犀角星。 便與放開聊展手。 那時相見望州亭。

> Now that we part, I leave these earnest words with you: The essence of Cao-Dong’s tradition cannot be captured in phrases. When the moon fills the phoenix forest, even the cold holds no dreams; Though years pass, the tortoise shell, when heated, still reveals its spirit. Do not stir the deep silence, lest you touch the venom of the snake’s head; You must clearly discern the star-like mark on the rhinoceros horn. Just let go and freely stretch out your hands— Then we shall meet again at Wangzhou Pavilion.
