> \*\*Inscription of Silent Illumination\*\*

默默忘言。 昭昭現前。 鑒時廓爾。 體處靈然。靈然獨照。 照中還妙。 露月星河。 雪松雲嶠。晦而彌明。 隱而愈顯。 鶴夢煙寒。 水含秋遠。浩劫空空。 相與雷同。 妙存默處。 功忘照中。妙存何存。 惺惺破昏。 默照之道。 離微之根。徹見離微。 金梭玉機。 正偏宛轉。 明暗因依。依無能所。 底時回互。 飲善見藥。 檛塗毒鼓。回互底時。 殺活在我。 門裡出身。 枝頭結果。默唯至言。 照唯普應。 應不墮功。 言不涉聽。萬象森羅。 放光說法。 彼彼證明。 各各問答。問答證明。 恰恰相應。 照中失默。 便見侵凌。證明問答。 相應恰恰。 默中失照。 渾成剩法。默照理圓。 蓮開夢覺。 百川赴海。 千峯向岳。如鵝擇乳。 如蜂採花。 默照至得。 輸我宗家。宗家默照。 透頂透底。 舜若多身。 母陀羅臂。始終一揆。 變態萬差。 和氏獻璞。 相如指瑕。當機有準。 大用不勤。 寰中天子。 塞外將軍。吾家底事。 中規中矩。 傳去諸方。 不要賺舉。

> Silence without words, yet clarity shines before us. When insight dawns, it is vast and open; in its essence, it is alive and mysterious. This living mystery shines alone; in its shining, there lies wonder. Like the moon and stars in a dewy sky, like snow-covered pines on cloudy peaks. Hidden, it grows brighter; concealed, it becomes more apparent. A crane dreams in misty cold; waters hold the distant autumn. Through endless ages, emptiness prevails—all things share this same nature. Wondrous presence dwells in silence; effort is forgotten within illumination. Where does this wondrous presence reside? It awakens sharply, dispelling confusion. The path of silent illumination is the root of both separation and subtlety. When you fully see separation and subtlety, it is like a golden shuttle and jade loom. Correct and biased intertwine; light and darkness rely on each other. This reliance has no subject or object—at that moment, there is mutual interplay. Drink the medicine of good vision; strike the drum coated with poison. When mutual interplay occurs, killing and bringing to life are in my hands. Step out from within the gate; the branch will bear fruit. Silence is the ultimate speech; illumination is universal response. Response does not fall into effort; speech does not involve hearing. The myriad things, vast and varied, radiate light and teach the Dharma. Each one bears witness, each one asks and answers. Questioning, answering, and bearing witness—they perfectly correspond. If illumination loses silence, intrusion and aggression arise. Bearing witness, questioning, and answering—they correspond perfectly. If silence loses illumination, it becomes mere surplus. When silence and illumination are perfectly realized, the lotus blooms and dreams awaken. A hundred rivers flow to the sea; a thousand peaks turn toward the mountain. Like a goose choosing milk, like a bee gathering pollen— silent illumination is the ultimate attainment, the special offering of our school. Our school's silent illumination penetrates the very top and bottom. The body of Sunyata, the arms of the Mother Buddha. From beginning to end, it is one continuous thread; yet its transformations are myriad. He-shi offered the raw jade; Xiang-ru pointed out its flaws. When the opportunity arises, there is clear judgment; the great function is effortless. Like the emperor within the realm, like the general beyond the border. The affair of our house follows the rules and standards. Transmit it to all directions—do not misrepresent it.
