> The warm smile at Vulture Peak, The cold meditation at Shaolin— East and West, a continuous thread, Passed down through thirty-three generations. Old Lu received robe and bowl, then fled— This event is clear and evident, Opening and closing, gathering and expanding. Waves of light and flame, Speaking freely from the mouth, Responding freely from the heart, The Way transmitted, the vessel received. Deep the source, long the flow— Nanyue and Qingyuan, Each generation finding worthy ones. Some, in silence, held to their lineage, Withdrawn and hidden, far in retreat, Sweeping away worldly traces, Devoted to the study of life and death. Pine for food, lotus for clothing, Nesting in grass seats, obscure and unshining, Nurturing maturity. Those who admired their way Drew near as teachers and companions. Plowing, planting, pounding rice, cooking, Gathering, drawing water, brewing tea— Wild herbs from the stream, grains from the plain, Content in austerity, Drawn from afar, gathering in numbers. Thus, a monks’ hall was built to receive them all. The splendor of mealtime and rest, Teachers and friends working together, Stripping away emotion, cutting off intellect, Rejecting scholarship, dismissing thought, Perfectly exhausting the mind, empty and clear. The lineage flows, the eye is alive, Manifesting in skillful means, Fulfilling capability, complete in itself. At the end of the Jianyan era, People suffered from chaos and separation. Xiang, Han, Jiang, Huai— War and fire ravaged monasteries and venerable communities, Leaving nine out of ten in ruins. Monks in woolen robes, with bowl and staff, Sought refuge in the southeast. The Siming meditation seat Was long known as Little Mount Lu. Sixty li east of the commandery, Lies the Tiantong practice place. The mountains wind and coil, their energy serene; The pines bend and twist, their bark rugged. Green cliffs draped with vines, Mist clearing to reveal lush emerald. A lone rainbow rests over the stream, Washed clean of dust, pure and rising. In my fourth year residing here, Students came from the ten directions, Gathering like clouds, flowing like water, Until the halls could hold no more. The monk Xing Shen Came urgently to report: “Those under the cypress courtyard Sleep exposed to dew, under the eaves, With hardly a mat or a place for bowl and robe. May we seek pure support to expand the hall?” I nodded in agreement. Soon, axes sounded in the woods, Adzes rang in the valleys. After over a year, Foundations laid, pillars aligned, Beams set, rafters joined, Ridgepoles spreading like wings, Tiles layered like scales. Fourteen bays in length, Twenty frames in width, Three covered walkways, Two open courtyards. The roof bears the rain, Below, no dampness lingers. Two hundred feet long, Sixteen zhang wide, Windows and beds, Bright, deep, and pure. Ten thousand fingers rest and eat, At ease, contented. Planning began in the winter of the Renzi year of Shaoxing, Work completed in the spring of the Jiayin year. Total cost: over fifteen thousand in paper currency. Warm in winter, cool in summer, Incense by day, lamps by night. Opening the bowl to eat, Washing the feet to sit. Plowing and tending within, Guided by stillness. Autumn reflects the ancient well, Spring enters the transformative pivot. Deep, silent, and accomplished, Brilliant, shining in function. Water fills the channel and flows; The valley echoes the call. Principle meets equality, Wisdom responds naturally. In movement and stillness, dignity and bearing, Needle and stone aid one another. Examining faults, sealing leaks, Polishing away blemishes, Tempering to a radiant edge, Rounding off sharp corners. Aim high, reach far, Following the steps of the ancients. Seeking support, offering effort— All equally bear the burden. Alas! Vessels flawed, learning shallow, Seeking ease, craving speed, Taking cunning as the path, Licentiousness as the goal, Plowing in empty talk, Starving without harvest. Battling in forceful debate, Winning, yet gaining nothing. Habits formed by seeing and hearing, Knowledge and understanding muddying the mind— This is what the Buddhas and patriarchs rebuke, Where demons and outsiders find their opening. Such faults and ailments, sprouting and spreading, Must be treated without delay. Ascend the Kunlun peaks, Release the waters of the river’s source, Cleanse the filth from liver and gall, Wash the haze from eye and mind. Traces of birth and death vanish, yet the subtle remains; Tracks of being and non-being dissolve, transcending measure. The dream of the long night is broken; The doubt of endless kalpas is uprooted. The vow of leaving home is fulfilled; The work of pilgrimage is accomplished. Those who walk together as companions May indeed come close to this.
