> Extensive Record of Chan Master Hongzhi, Volume 9

> True diligence is free from delusion. The offering of Dharma is flawless. Sublime adornment arises from conditions. Wisdom and skillful means remain unbound. The nature of Vairocana is empty, yet the body of wisdom is perfectly clear. The pores of Samantabhadra contain endless Dharma realms. Look up—it is high; drill into it—it is solid. Nirvana does not stain; polishing does not wear it thin. Coral seas and night tides drink in its radiance. Jasmine groves and spring rhythms wash away its chill. The butterfly of equality flips through dreams; the gull of the current rushes to its vow. At the Four Brights Linglong Rock Temple, I have lived as a mountain monk for nearly thirty years. The assembly gathers, sharing in humble fare. I go out personally, bowl in hand, following the path of transformation, begging to sustain our practice. To depict this illusory form, plain words must suffice—wherever one goes, meeting people, gaining support, a topic for conversation. The monks wish to carve these words, yet family ugliness should not be displayed. Moreover, those who know are foolish; those who speak lose. The ancestors bear witness, having arrived directly; the Buddha expounded, fearing confusion. Facing the wall, lamps connect; the mind empty, light emerges. Wandering spiritually into its depths, the luminous self-illuminates, the essence empty. Attaining the whole of the Way, continuous as if existing, its function subtle. The nostrils cannot bear a cartload; the tongue, clamped, cannot stretch. The ancestors’ meaning, exhausted, becomes transparent; the Buddha’s work, illuminated, becomes complete. The sword swings through emptiness, cutting freely through obstructions. The pearl receives reflections, acceptance and rejection following along. Clouds and birds lack pattern; wind chimes sound their own melody. The speech of autumn insects, the script of wood borers—all transmit the Buddha’s chosen vessels alike. Facing the Way, the school speaks in full, yet says half. The bhikkhu <note>Shiyan</note> requested this preface.
