### 六代祖師畫像贊并引

> Portraits of the Six Patriarchs with Preface

天童乞食于黃巖。用祥上人。出六代祖師畫像。以贊見託。原所以為祖者。直明第一頭事。因緣建立。皆兒孫分上。祖不云乎。不與凡聖同躔。超然名之曰祖。繁枝遠派。應化機用。妙得根源。自然隨順。斯不言可諭。茲幸隨喜稽首贊云。

> Tiantong, while on his alms round in Huangyan, met with Elder Yongxiang. The elder presented a portrait of the six patriarchs and asked Tiantong to write a eulogy for it. The reason one is called a patriarch is simply that they directly illuminate the foremost matter—their awakening, practice, and teachings all arise from their own realization. These manifestations are only relevant to their spiritual descendants. The patriarch himself said: "One who does not share the same path as ordinary beings or sages, who transcends all categories—such a one is called a patriarch." The many branches and far-reaching lineages manifest according to beings' needs with wondrous skill. Those who have truly grasped the root can naturally respond with effortless adaptation. This truth is understood without words. Now, with joy and reverence, I bow and offer this eulogy.
