> Portrait of Chan Practitioner and Chief Monastic

> Clouds rest upon his shoulders, Snow covers his crown. In emptiness, wisdom is nurtured; Still and serene, he forgets all conditions. The moon strikes coral— the ocean shines, nightless. Pine resin becomes amber— the roots hold richness through the years. Nature is inherently equal; The Way follows its own course. The hammer and mallet are in hand, The staff and whisk become the fist. Leopard mist wraps the catalpa trees in the wild; Dragon thunder roars in peach-blossom rivers. In the autumn of cloud-water monasteries, There is the air of an old master. In spring, streams and mountains and grasses and trees Were once brewed in wind and smoke. The diligent effort of disciples is the family tradition of the Buddhas and patriarchs. The threshold of the needle-and-thread is crossed; The lamp flame in the shrine continues. To the one walking the Way, there are no lingering guests at the Dragon Gate— Now, cranes and turtles have all become immortals.

> Clear autumn waters, cold as pure energy. Bare branches, chilled to the bone. Spring deepens in the green-eyed willows. Snow lingers early on white-haired peaks. With the appearance of a great being, they remain unshaken in the midst of emptiness. With great inner strength, they are still toppled by the gentlest breeze. These subtle wonders defy description— tell the painter his work is but a sketch.

> Pine knots are old and tough. Rock edges bear early frost. Gulls idle over vast deserts. Wild geese vanish into the vast mist. Trigrams: Qian is continuous, Kun is broken. Shapes and tools: compasses are round, squares are square. In the bustling market, we meet and I casually mention— This family’s ladle is short, that one’s pole is long.

> Deeply still, serene and present, The Way transcends what is seen and heard. True awareness is inherently within, Wondrously complete, it needs no new achievement. Like the spirit of an empty valley—filling all the vast realms. Like the moon's reflection—dividing into a hundred billion forms. Attachment-free, like duckweed drifting on flowing waters; Completely free, like a bird soaring among passing clouds. To have attained this is to stand on solid ground, And to use it is effortless, never forced.

> His mouth is wide, his nose high. His spirit is serene, his mind empty. Snowy reeds stretch far along the riverbank; Water and sky share the same autumn hue. In the cold night, the Big Dipper hangs its golden handle; The moon sets behind the western hills, hiding its jade bow. True wisdom turns in subtle ways, While illusions dwell in perfect harmony. The ancient Buddha naturally meets the pillar— Turn your hand one way or the other and see how things transform.

> Among cliffs and valleys, the plants and trees are the life of spring. Over rivers and lakes, the wind and mist are the spirit of autumn. The hair and beard are wild like snow, the eyes and brows like autumn waters. In deep silence, one enters the cave of the cold toad. In perfect clarity, one nurtures the pearl of the old oyster. Step by step, one walks through the dust of the world. Gate after gate, one emerges from the self. Do not worry about the tip of your finger—the tune of the burnt-tailed zither. On the hook of your intention, what matters is the red-scaled fish.

> The body at ease, nothing to grasp. The mind still, feelings cease to flow. A sliver of moon shines clear and bright. A single cloud drifts long and slow. Hair thins, white as snow on a high peak. Eyes and brow cool, clear as an ancient stream in autumn. Like a touch of spring’s subtle wonder, Spreading over plants and trees across the ten directions.

> The Taihang Mountains wind and twist, The Yellow River flows and spreads. A clear and pure mind, A chest open and spacious. Before the cool breeze reaches the mouth and teeth, White snow has already settled on the eyebrows and beard. Shaolin’s silence holds no other words; Huangmei’s pounding of rice does not rely on books. When one fully sees the original face of who we truly are, How dare we rashly divide and label with words?

> The waves of consciousness drain dry. The belly loosens and grows wide. The mouth turns rapids, vast as the sea. The hair hangs like snow, cold as a mountain. The subtle family method is transmitted through a skull's eye. Ingenious miraculous powers spring from a bare flesh mound. For those who follow along— The hammer and chisel leave no scar.

> The mountain capped with snow, one peak of white. Deep waters in autumn, two pools of blue. The trigrams and lines first formed their symbols. Skin and bone took shape on their own. The simplicity before chaos. The spirit before yin and yang were divided. The Way is passed on without stepping into this world. The meaning is complete without opening a single sutra. It responds like clouds and moon, and acts like thunder and lightning. When grounded, it holds oceans still and steadies mountains. When untethered, it drifts like a broken stem or floating weed.

> Sitting in dull stupor, idle and slack. The mountain is empty, the ravine runs dry. Leaving the subtle, entering the coarse, Bias and center trade places back and forth. A pine tree, resin of a thousand years— Its crane's nest dreams in the cold. A coral moon at midnight— Whales leap through the chilling waves. When all effort is exhausted, How could borrowing a path be difficult? Turning a step, one returns to the forest: all is harmonious energy. Opening the mouth to speak, the words are vast like the Milky Way's rolling waves. If you meet a master on the road, who would dare deceive them?

> Miraculous transmission, true transformation, changes in every aspect — divine. With bare feet, through empty kalpas, traveling back along the Path. With white hair, borrowing companions, yet still arriving as a person. Without a mind to distinguish self and other, Where can roots and dust settle? Misty willows and orioles in blossoms — bustling and lively. In a time of peace and harmony, everyone shares the spring.

> Bright and penetrating eyes, A few threads of graying hair. The bearing of mountains and valleys, The charm of mist and rain. Sitting firm, yet the mind is empty— Countless things appear, like seals stamped on the ocean. Emptiness at the core: it becomes fiery insight. Movement within: stillness transforms into thunder. Clouds drift, and action is unhurried. Lightning flashes, and the function is swift. A noble one does not stir the dust. The great patriarch Huineng in Huangmei passed on this robe with his own hands.

> The silent mind transmits the teaching. Fully awake, letting go of all conditions. Leaves fall in the white dew. Clouds scatter in the clear blue sky. Like the jade wheel of the moon pushed by the rabbit— Thus washing away the darkness of night. Like the silver cage releasing a crane— Thus flying through the cold mist. Use function to illuminate the fundamental place. Use companions to enter the path. Without error, the principle is equal. Without striving, the Way is natural. When meeting one who understands, Then open the fist and show.

> Standing firm against spring snow, cold eyes pierce through the onlooker. A raincoat wraps the rain of rivers and lakes, a hat floats across the Milky Way's riverbank. Clumsy, forgetful of the world, yet carrying water from the well; wonderful, beyond words, like carving a wheel. Mountain birds and valley flowers speak their own sounds and colors. In every direction, all ten realms, the body appears— manifest in every atom of every land.

> A brisk and dignified presence, With gentle brows and eyes. A single stream divides, Tracing its source to Kunlun’s head. A hundred rivers swallow the tide, Settling at coral roots. Wind and smoke are clear and distant—autumn’s trace. Grass and trees flourish with grace—spring’s blessing. On ancient walls, a shuttle moves, like a dormant dragon’s spine. In cold pools, a jade disc floats—the soul of the moon at night. An aging face with fading beard, Snow on the head, silk at the chin. A square head, as if chiseled, A dull mouth, like a pestle. When we meet, we casually enjoy ourselves, Used to eating from humble offerings. Straw sandals are cheap, as Master Chenzun sells them; Water for the meal is repaid by Teacher Wang. When the Dharma does not match the mind, One attains the study of meditation and wisdom with equality. When the mind has no abode, One naturally sees the moment of detachment and manifestation.

> Through hardship, the pine and jade endure. Clouds and moon drift high, at ease. Wild snow settles in hair and beard, Autumn ripples ripple in brows and eyes. Wisdom as a staff is held, Stillness enters the path's circle. The awakened mind is clear and bright— Illusory things appear as scattered spots. The spirit of grasses and trees: natural grace, freely found. The presence of the forest grove: Who holds back the message of spring?

> Snow soaks the roots of his hair. Autumn grows in the folds of his eyes. A traveler by the Bright Moon Spring, A monk atop the Clear Wind Tower. The tide overturns the yak-tail whisk, trampling dragons and elephants. The wind spirals like a ram's horn, transforming into Kun and Peng beasts. In overseeing Buddhist affairs, he is the most despised of men.

> A humble hermit from river lands, A fellow pilgrim of the Jiang-Zhe strand. Profound stillness holds the essence of all things, Wondrous presence, freed from clinging and all strings. A black-vine staff for journeys far and near, A dull ax in mountain wilds for dwelling clear— Thus the roving monk in forest grounds, Thus the misty traveler whose home knows no bounds.

> A withered form like deadwood, Footprints like clouds across the wild. Bright as moonlight bathing the night, Still as an autumn pool reflecting the void. In three thousand worlds, I show half a body; Over ninety thousand miles, I travel in a single breath. I respond to every being according to its need— Not just a hundred billion, but countless forms.

> On the towering mountain, traces of autumn remain. Across the faint clouds, no lasting root is found. Descending into the depths of ultimate silence— Emerging through the gate of deep meditation. Effortlessly still, limpid yet present. Clear but not stirred, mingled but never muddied.

> Eyes deep as lacquer, Face the color of gardenia. Wisdom still, like the clear moon shining, Body free, like untamed clouds in the wild. He sweeps away the old venerable masters' ways, And nods subtly to the teacher Wang. Needle and thread, linking bright and hidden seams, Notes and rhythms, playing and blowing alone. Who do you think this is? A descendant of Hibiscus, a child of Dangu.

> A mountain of sharp peaks knows early snow. Deep waters feel the first touch of autumn. In stillness, it echoes\* through an empty valley. In motion, it drifts like a leisurely cloud. One who cherishes transcendence and silent focus— Who can share such a journey to the innermost center?

> The mountain's form is like a floating cloud. The reflection appears like the moon on water. Its capacity is as vast as the great ocean. Its measure is as boundless as empty space. It receives all things, truly without any deliberate mind. In responding to everything, each encounter leaves no trace. It follows conditions with awareness, yet is wondrously without any mark. Thoroughly abandoning all dependence, it is empty yet never aimless.

> A silent heart transmits the truth. Do not judge by outward forms. A crane dreams in a misty nest, A toad feels cold in a moonlit cave. In stillness, the myriad causes hide within a single breath. In a laugh, all things can be seen upon the brow. Now my hair and beard are half-gray. On the path of the monastic community, I have endured a hundred trials.

> Just a person, appearing everywhere — like the moon in a thousand waters, like spring atop a hundred flowers. There is no other way; one is not stained by any dust. What was familiar becomes distant; what was distant becomes close. Silence itself is speech; stillness itself is spirit. The bowl fills with rice—satisfied, yet still joyful. The staff is clenched in a fist—hungry, yet ready to anger.

> One mark, no mark—empty space, equal in measure. One body, many bodies—forms and images all like spring. In motion, like clouds emerging from mountain peaks. In stillness, like the spirit dwelling in the valley. Manifesting forms, teaching the Dharma, in every land, in every particle of dust.

> Look at the wondrous tip of the brush— Spring breezes cannot melt the snowy hair on a wild head; Autumn hues alone polish the chill in the eyes. A smile spreads across the face, two eyebrows unfurl; A full belly, wide as three bamboo strips, sits on a curved wooden bench. Grasping the black rattan staff, Casting the mold and model of Buddhas and Patriarchs, Bringing life to the spirit of the monastic community. Do not come to stroke the whiskers at the tiger's mouth— Who dares to scratch an itch on the serpent's head?

> Cold mountains bear traces of snow. Spring's message enters the flowers' roots. Does creation lack its handle? Distinctions naturally have their gate. Appearing and disappearing, All share in this grace.

> These dry bones have been weathered through. The nostrils sense an open, boundless space. Vast emptiness transcends past, present, future— No smallest point is established. Each face bears wind and frost. The body-mind is as cold as a moon reflected on water. When emotional dust is entirely cleansed, All forms are seen as one.

> Shoulders hunched from cold — naturally tall. Eyes made bigger by hunger. A withered rattan cane held tight in a fist. A crooked wooden seat, silently occupied. Silent yet alone in spirit, Who can harmonize if one begins to sing? In autumn, the water's hues are pure, without a trace of flaw. In spring, entering blossoms — wonderfully beyond all measures and rules.

> Half my hair has turned white, A slight blush colors my smiling face. Like autumn water in the wilderness, formless, Like spring in the forest, full of virtue. Flowers blossom thick, confusing dreamy butterflies, The distant sky swallows the flight of geese. If you ask how many bodies I have, I am with you—north, south, east, and west.

> A sliver of flesh, the tongue. Two flakes of skin, the lips— Sometimes they speak of the Way and discuss Zen, Then suddenly, thunder roars and lightning flashes. All traces of activity vanish. The single hue of your true nature reveals itself. Originally, there is nothing—the mirror is not a stand. In the lands of Hu and Han, no mark is left—what is there to see?

> The winds shape delusion deeply. The body decays with age. Brow bones feel shadows heavy. Breath stills, returning to clarity. Before creation’s signs emerged, One point of perfect radiance shone. Frost washes the Dipper and Ox constellations. Clear autumn skies span the Silver River. Do not let even a trace carve emptiness. Walk the Way’s center—everlasting peace.

> The body and mind are like wild mountains, the face and eyes like gray grass and ash. In silent speech, a single phrase is uttered, encompassing both light and dark. The mechanism flows like fire from the sky, like lightning above. It stirs and bursts forth like thunder from the earth, the yang within. Transformation and change, success and failure—these are the affairs of life. The Way—everything comes from such a place.

> Calmly seated on a folding chair, The longer lasting, the more fragrant. Silent, without trace of black or white; In poverty, unaware of yellow or grey. Dwelling without form—like a turtle hidden within itself. Moving without pattern—like a bird soaring in the sky. The moon is brilliant, and fish swallow its light. Flowers bloom richly, and bees gather their sound. Coming along together, everywhere is vast and splendid.

> Beneath the brow, the eyes are deep. The forehead’s bone is arched and steep. To speak of Zen, the mouth is narrow. The heart, for Dharma, empty and deep. At ease, with tricks and ways unfurled, In quietude, has a way of life. The crescent moon, washed bright in autumn’s chill, While a hundred blossoms dye the spring with skill.

> Darkness reveals brightness, emptiness holds fullness. Water and sky share autumn's hue— Moonlight levels tides both day and night. Nothing is present, yet nothing is absent. Nothing gives birth, yet nothing is unborn. All dust arises and falls as it will; Myriad transformations move freely, unbound. In silent completeness, a wall hangs idle, wordless; In upright acceptance, who can stick a bad name on it?

> Such a teacher-monk Has a face that repels. His name-snatching is unlike the rest— What concealment has he ever achieved? The vast sky is too wide for hanging a sword. The deep ocean holds tricks for trimming a lamp. Roused, the mendicant is fully equipped, Exquisite is the sage's sharp edge. Entering Min, ask, "How is that, is he capable?"

> When the mind is at ease, the body cannot confine it. Even when the stomach is full, the mouth still wants more. The wondrous response adapts to all situations, lively and clear. Silently transmitting a single phrase, perfectly round and whole. Presented before you now— Do you recognize it or not?

> Though his nose is straight and his eyes deeply set, In silence, he feels his mouth has vanished. Who can grasp the wondrous place And pass down the mind-to-mind transmission? If you simply understand like that in the present moment, Discern the reflection in the shadow—where doors hang in the withered forest.

> This body is but a form, shaped by the dust of the world— A monk's staff for the evening meal in the forest monastery. On spring mountains, snow settles upon my hair, now withered white; In autumn waters, windless, my eyes grow cold and clear. The wondrous, luminous field of mind— The gate that holds both purity and defilement. When cut off from all conditions, I stand alive and free; When clinging to nothing, I am empty and spirit-like, aware. Taking medicine for the affliction, who needs to search the herbal texts? Asking for the source along the way—the map and scriptures appear of themselves.

> His form is serene and detached. His mind and heart are open and empty. Too lazy to study Buddhism, Too dull to know the scriptures. In stillness, he responds to all conditions without boundary. In silence, he contains the ten thousand forms, yet has room to spare. He equals all things, dreaming as a butterfly. He delights in his nature, watching fish at play. That stream is me, but I am not that stream.

> A single, elusive thing— No name or form can capture it. The great whale dwells in the ocean's depths; The old hare lies in the moon's crater. Once stretched, it cannot shrink. The crooked is made straight. If you simply win like that, do you truly understand? No need to shout with joy— It's just a game of dice on the board.

> To resemble is not to be. To be is not to resemble. In motion, like drifting clouds. In stillness, like still water. Able to adapt without losing your place— The old monk is found among the weeds; Your true self existed before the two forms of heaven and earth. Do not let this body and bones Be futilely hung on others' lips or teeth.

> Eyes gently closed, both lids at rest, Joy lifts the brows, a smile expressed. Autumn's face holds water's clear hue, Spring's tidings burst in blossoms anew. Stumbling, fumbling—slow and shy, Simple and silly, with a knowing eye. In this family's way, the nose hangs low, and the brush and touch let the truths flow.

> Hearing someone's name isn't the same as meeting them face to face. In the end, it's all one and the same. Amid the noisy dust of the world, one remains at ease. When the market price is high, it becomes cheap. A perfect pearl doesn't need to be turned; Refined gold is polished over and over. When the sharp edge of an encounter strikes, it's like a bolt of lightning across the blue sky.

> His hair and beard are aged, Yet his eyes are bright and clear. Born like autumn in wild waters, Like snow shining upon Cold Mountain. His mind is vast as the ocean's depths, His capacity swallowing rivers whole. In every moment, he misses no opportunity, Everywhere he acts with steady, reliable skill.

> Drawing a gourd by looking at its model— When we meet, do we recognize each other? Having missed the sword buried at Fengcheng, If you can see through it, the pearl of Hepu returns.
