> Dust. His surname was Yang, a native of Bingzhou. At the age of twelve, he dreamed of a golden figure of extraordinary appearance, who led him into a pure monastery. The next morning, he told his parents, earnestly asking to become a monk. Before they granted his wish, he wept and refused to eat. His parents, moved by his natural sincerity and unable to quell his longing, reluctantly yielded. He then went to Caotang Temple to study under a master, reciting the \*Vimalakirti Sutra\* and the Bodhisattva Precepts, staying awake all night. At seventeen, he attended lectures on the \*Vimalakirti Sutra\* and grasped its general meaning. When he reached twenty, he received the full precepts and upheld the monastic code without a single lapse. At twenty-three, he mastered both texts and doctrines, and further studied Logic and Consciousness-Only teachings, expounding them without flaw. In the second year of Tianyou, when the Li family controlled Hedong, Emperor Wu invited him to reside in the Pure Land Hall of Daan Temple. There he was provided with the four necessities and devoted himself entirely to studying the scriptures, cultivating the practice of rebirth in the higher realms. He held grand vegetarian feasts open to all, five times in succession. Dust often used his own body to feed wolves and tigers, venturing into the mountain valleys, but the beasts would sniff at him and flee. He also went naked into the thickets to let mosquitoes and flies bite him as an act of giving. He would buy fish and birds to release them, offer food to prisoners, relieve the poor and needy, and donate banners and canopies to the Jingming and Jinzang stupas. He also lectured on the new \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* and transmitted it to Master Jihui of Chongfu Temple. For three years afterward, he never left the temple gate, reciting the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* once with a single bow to each character, and bowing to each character of the \*Great Buddha Name Sutra\*, totaling one hundred twenty scrolls. In daily life, he wore only plain cloth and never hoarded surplus possessions. Emperor Gao Zu of the Later Jin bestowed on him a purple robe and an honorary title, but he firmly declined. At Tianzhu Temple, he showed signs of a slight illness, and on the morning of the twenty-seventh day of the seventh month, reciting the practice of rebirth in the higher realms, he passed away. He was sixty-three by secular age, and forty-four by monastic years. When his body was cremated, several hundred relics were obtained. Emperor Jin Zu ordered his burial on the western mountain of Jinshui, where a small stupa remains to this day.
