The teachings of the Way spread eastward over six or seven hundred years. Across the northern and southern regions, many Vinaya masters emerged, among whom the great Master Chengzhao of the Tang Dynasty stands out. The three major Vinaya texts he composed fully express the skillful means of the Tathagata and open the gate of liberation for all beings. The merit of upholding the Three Jewels lies precisely in these works. Later, the one who further elucidated these texts by composing commentaries and revealing their profound meaning was the great Vinaya Master Dashi of the Song Dynasty.
During the Tianping era of our imperial line, when the Vinaya was transmitted by the Great Master Jianzhen of the Tang Dynasty, our land universally received and recited the four-part Vinaya text. Regarding practice, it all follows the Southern Mountain school's writings. If one were to follow the Sarvastivada school, it would be like inverting the essential structure and distorting the meaning of the teachings.
Nowadays, the common precepts of the universal ordination are also based on these commentaries. Among these, the commentary on this precept text and its sub-commentaries have been particularly circulated. This present collated edition is the result of my teacher's long and dedicated effort. Now that the work is complete, he has proofread it repeatedly and is preparing to have it printed. He then instructed his disciple to check the manuscript(begotten not worthy). Although my understanding is shallow and barren, I dare not defy my teacher's command. Having compared the old edition with the new one, after a single reading, I cannot bear to put it down in my joy. Forgetting my own shortcomings, I take up the brush and bow my head in reverence.
