> At Mount Jing there is the Hall of a Thousand Monks.

> The Chronological Biography of Great Master Dahui Zonggao records: In the seventh year of the Shaoxing era, the ding-si year, the Master was forty-nine years old. He presided over Mount Jing. It also states: In the eleventh year of the Shaoxing era, the xin-you year, the Master was fifty-three years old. The Thousand-Monk Pavilion was completed. The Master dispatched a messenger to Quannan to request an account from Privy Councillor Li Hanlao. The account roughly said: <note>and so forth</note>. The monastery is a hundred li from the city. Since Chan Master Guoyi of the Tang dynasty first cleared the brambles and weeds, drove away the dragons and serpents, and dwelt there, the monastery had no permanent property. The mountain's divine dragons truly aided in gathering conditions and support. When the Master first arrived, the assembly numbered only three hundred. After two years, the Dharma assembly greatly flourished, and the assembly approached two thousand. Yet the monastery had only two monks' halls, insufficient to accommodate them. Thus he conceived the idea to the east of the monastery, cutting into the mountain and opening a site, to build a multi-storied pavilion of ten bays. With Vairocana Buddha facing south, lofty and majestic at the center, rows of seating for a thousand monks were arranged to the left and right. Continuous platforms were set, with meals of gruel below. Construction began in the spring of the tenth year. By the spring of the following year, it was announced complete <note>and so forth</note>. It further states: The completion of a single pavilion—what is there worth mentioning about Master Ren? Yet those who follow convention and are narrow-minded regard it as extraordinary. Is this not exceedingly shallow?

> Lu Fangweng's "Record of the Yuánjué Pavilion" in the \*Weinan Collection\* states: On a certain month and day in the tenth year of the Chunxi reign, the Western Pavilion of Jing Mountain Xingqing Wanshou Chan Monastery was completed. To the east, there is the Thousand Monks Pavilion. During the Shaoxing era, the great Chan Master Dahui Zonggao, a foremost figure of the Dharma gate, was residing on the mountain. At that time, the assembly exceeded a thousand in number; therefore, it was named the Thousand Monks Pavilion.
