> Chronicle of Master Zhijue's Self-Practice at Huiri Yongming Temple

> Yongping Dharma Master Shanda Yunfeng Zen Temple, Successor Patriarch, Abode of Illusion Monk Shi Wenchong, Recollated and Compiled.

> With reverence, the ancient sages did not boast of their own abilities. In reflection, the wise ones of old did not flaunt their own virtues. Yet, the Buddhist scriptures teach the principle of first cultivating oneself and then transforming others, while the Confucian tradition advocates for recommending the worthy without avoiding personal ties. The master often told his disciples: "In examining the 'Collection on Spreading Light,' I found that a previous worthy composed a text called 'Inspecting the Three Karmas.' It says: 'The sense of self-reproach is still unclear, and the precise meaning has not been fully revealed. Therefore, one examines one's actions against the mind. In all practices, recognizing one's shortcomings only increases negligence. What does this inspection entail? From morning to midday, midday to evening, evening to night, night to dawn—even in each moment, each thought—how many thoughts and actions are there? How many are good, how many evil? How many thoughts seek to overcome afflictions? How many thoughts aim to subdue demons and enemies? How many thoughts recall the Three Jewels and the Four Noble Truths? How many thoughts realize suffering, emptiness, and impermanence? How many thoughts dwell on repaying the kindness of parents? How many thoughts wish to endure suffering on behalf of all beings? How many thoughts inspire the Bodhisattva path? How many thoughts intend to practice generosity and uphold precepts? How many thoughts aspire to cultivate patience and diligence? How many thoughts seek meditative stillness and manifest wisdom? How many thoughts aim to compassionately rescue beings in the five realms? How many thoughts encourage the practice of what is difficult to practice? How many thoughts strive to achieve what is difficult to achieve? How many thoughts endure hardship to establish the Buddha’s teachings? How many thoughts aspire to become a Buddha and transform all beings?'"

> Having already examined the mind, the next step is to examine the speech. In the time since the morning, how many profound truths have you been able to express in your speaking? How many sacred scriptures have you been able to read? How many passages of text have you been able to recite properly? How many times have you been able to praise the virtues of the Buddha? How many times have you been able to honor the deeds of the Bodhisattvas? How many times have you been able to offer admiration and rejoice in the good of others? How many times have you been able to dedicate your merits and make heartfelt vows?

> Then examine your body again. At this moment, how many times have you bowed to the Buddha? How many times have you bowed to the Dharma and the Sangha? How many times have you labored to sweep the stupa and clean the ground? How many times have you burned incense and scattered flowers? How many times have you cleared away dust and arranged offerings? How many times have you hung banners, adorned the altar, and joined your palms in offering? How many times have you circumambulated the Buddha in reverence, ten, a hundred, or a thousand times?

> When I examine myself in this way, I find that my understanding of truth is very shallow and my violations of the path are extremely numerous. My pure, wholesome actions are barely worth mentioning, while heavy afflictions and obstructions crowd before my eyes like a dense forest. The darkness hindering my progress only grows thicker—how can I ever attain liberation? Looking at myself in this way, I see I cannot even save myself. So how can I find the time to discuss others' faults and virtues? Therefore, I must earnestly train and reproach myself regarding my three kinds of actions (body, speech, and mind). I must truly know: how much good have I done, and how much evil? Since I have not first examined and disciplined myself, how can I guide and teach others? Therefore, a bodhisattva first cultivates their own practice in order to help liberate sentient beings. As the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: "With infinite wealth, he gathers the poor. With pure observance of precepts, he gathers those who break them. With patient endurance and gentle conduct, he gathers the angry. With great diligence, he gathers the lazy. With single-minded meditation, he gathers the scattered. With discerning wisdom, he gathers the ignorant."

> The sutra also says: "Abide by the precepts yourself and encourage others to do the same. Practice meditation yourself and encourage others to do so." The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom states: Our original teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, never abandoned even a merit as small as threading a needle. The ancestral teacher Nagarjuna Bodhisattva explained this, saying: "It is like a hundred-year-old grandfather dancing. Why does he do it? For the sake of teaching his children and grandchildren." This is even more relevant for those who have not yet reached the ultimate stage—they are still focused on self-benefit. From the initial resolve of faith at the Ten Faiths stage, proceeding through the Ten Abodes, Ten Practices, Ten Dedications, and Ten Grounds, onward to the Samantabhadra stage before Buddhahood at the point of Equal Enlightenment, one still practices the path of benefiting both self and others. Only upon reaching the stage of Marvelous Enlightenment, at the Samantabhadra stage after Buddhahood, does one engage solely in actions to benefit others.

> Thus, the practice is made clear, and the teaching is shown in order. The disciples then asked about the practices to follow, and some were recorded based on the teacher’s own words. These few accounts are compiled as a record. Since the practice of self-discipline is itself worthy of observation, the gate of guiding others will not fall. Because of this benefit, I dare to present this preface. Now, I will fully list the one hundred and eight bodhisattva deeds carried out throughout each day and night. They are listed below.

> Universal offering to all sentient beings throughout the cosmos, throughout day and night, we take refuge and pay homage to the Three Jewels, and in the morning pay respects to the Buddhas of the ten directions.

> I take refuge in the Buddha.

> I bow to the Perfectly Awakened One, the all-knowing, The tranquil, impartial source of ultimate truth. His marks of excellence are profound—beyond existence or non-existence; His wisdom light shines universally throughout countless worlds.

> I wholeheartedly pay homage to the eternal Buddha Treasure, the One with Two Feet Supreme, throughout the ten directions and three times, filling all space and realms across countless worlds—the Buddha Jewel that constantly abides. To all Dharma Treasures in this world and beyond, among humans and devas, along with true relics and sacred images—every single stupa and temple—I also pay homage. May the sacred power of the Three Jewels protect and shelter all buddha dwellings. Together with all beings throughout the Dharma Realm, may each of us manifest our bodies to go and pay homage. Although there is essentially no body performing the homage nor a Buddha receiving it, we do not deny the illusory forms. They manifest like reflections throughout the entire Dharma Realm.

> Second, we pay homage to the Dharma.

> With single-minded reverence, I pay homage to the Dharma Treasure, the Supreme One Free from Desire, abiding in all the worlds — throughout the ten directions, the past, present, and future, covering the entire universe, within realms as numerous as atoms of dust. To the sacred scriptures of the twelve divisions, found in the heavens, among humans, in the Dragon Palace, and hidden in the ocean depths — all the holy teachings. In the same way as bowing to the Buddha, I extend my mind to every place where these scriptures are kept. May my countless manifested beings journey to each one and pay their respects.

> I pay homage to the Sangha, the community of practitioners.

> With a single-minded heart, I pay homage to all the long-residing Sangha treasures, the most venerable ones, who dwell throughout the ten directions, the three times, filling all space and reaching every corner of the Dharma realm, down to the smallest atom and dust mote. I pay homage to all the great Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Śrāvakas—all the wise and holy beings—who reside in jeweled pure lands, mountain grottos, and rocky hermitages. In the same way as I bowed to the Buddha, I now extend my mind to all the places where the Sangha abides, and from every single one of my transformation bodies, I go to pay reverence.

May these clouds of incense become a platform of brilliant light, offering to all Buddhas, the sacred teachings, all Bodhisattvas, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and all heavenly beings. May they accept these offerings and use them to further the Buddha's work. I pray that all beings throughout the Dharma Realm enter into the ocean of my offering, together awakening to the unborn, true reality." With single-minded devotion, hold the incense burner and visualize this incense smoke transforming into pearls, garlands, fragrant terraces, jeweled towers, heavenly garments, sublime music, rare fruits, clouds of flowers, and every kind of offering. Offer them to all Buddhas of the ten directions, accomplishing great Buddha-work.

> Namo to all the countless Buddhas, perfectly enlightened ones of the ten directions. Homage to them. (The mantra begins:) Om, Tsale, Tsule, Tsunti, Svaha.

> This ringing of the bell now spreads throughout the entire universe. It performs the great work of the Buddha, awakening all unenlightened beings to different paths. May all who hear this sound realize the Great Perfection of Wisdom.

> Seventy-Fourth. Throughout the six periods of day and night, cultivate the five forms of repentance. Cleanse and purify the six sense organs. For the sake of all beings in the Dharma Realm, for the four kinds of kindness, the twenty-five forms of existence, and the twelve types of sentient beings, rely on the power of the Three Jewels. Before the Buddhas of the ten directions, with sincere resolve, repent together with all beings in the Dharma Realm. From the beginning, when consciousness first arose, up to this very day, due to ignorance and false actions, we have created all kinds of birth and death. Following favorable and unfavorable circumstances, we have given rise to feelings of attachment and aversion, stirring up the six sense organs, and creating countless offenses. Through many eons, the eye organ, because of its attachment to forms, has craved all sensory objects. By clinging to these objects, we received this human body and are born into various places. Sometimes we are attached to forms — forms corrupt my eyes, making me a slave to love and gratitude. Thus, forms cause me to wander through the three realms. As a servant to these base things, I am blind and see nothing. The eye organ, being unwholesome, has harmed me greatly. The Buddhas of the ten directions always exist, never ceasing, but my turbid, evil eyes are obstructed and cannot see them. Now I finally awaken. I recite and uphold the inconceivable treasury of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in Samantabhadra and all World-Honored Ones. May all the heavy offenses created by the eye organ of myself and all beings in the Dharma Realm be completely purified.

> I repent of the wrongs of my ears. From beginningless time, my ear faculty, conditioned by external sounds, would give rise to deluded attachment upon hearing pleasant tones, and upon hearing harsh sounds, would stir up the hundred and eight kinds of afflictions, like thieves that harm me. These evil ears of mine have brought about negative outcomes, constantly hearing unpleasant sounds, giving rise to all kinds of grasping. Because of this distorted hearing, I have fallen into the lower realms and borderlands, where the true Dharma is not heard. I am everywhere confused and attached, with no moment of rest. Because of these hollow sounds, I exhaust my spirit and awareness. The Buddhas of the ten directions are always teaching the Dharma, but my defiled and evil ears obstruct me from hearing it. Now I have finally awakened. I recite and uphold the great treasury of merit within the Mahayana sutras, and turn in refuge to Samantabhadra and all World-Honored Ones. May all the heavy sins created by the ear faculty of myself and all beings throughout the Dharma Realm be utterly purified.

> I confess the sins of the nose. Since beginningless time, relying on this organ of smell, I have been captivated by various fragrances, confused and unable to see clearly. This has stirred up the knots of afflictions and awakened the thieves of defilements that lay dormant within me. All these have led to discrimination, causing me to fall into the cycle of birth and death. The wondrous fragrance of the virtues of all Buddhas in the ten directions fills the entire realm of reality. Yet, because of my defiled and obstructed nose, I have been unable to smell it. Now I finally awaken. I recite and uphold the pure and wondrous treasury of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in Samantabhadra and all Enlightened Ones. May all the heavy sins created by the noses of myself and all beings throughout the Dharma Realm be utterly purified.

> I repent the offenses of the tongue. From beginningless time, all the evil and unwholesome actions created by the tongue include: craving delicious flavors, harming living beings, breaking precepts, and opening the door to indulgence. Furthermore, through the tongue, verbal offenses arise—false speech, flattery, divisive talk, and harsh words; slandering the Three Jewels, praising wrong views, teaching what is not the Dharma as if it were the Dharma, and teaching what is the Dharma as if it were not the Dharma. All the thorns of evil karma emerge from the tongue. The cutting off of the wheel of the true Dharma also arises from the tongue. Because of these causes and conditions, one will fall into evil realms for hundreds of kalpas and thousands of lifetimes, with no hope of escape. The flavor of the Buddhas’ Dharma fills the entire Dharma realm, yet due to the obstruction of my defiled and evil tongue, I am unable to teach it. Now I have begun to awaken. I recite and uphold the great vehicle’s secret treasury of all Buddhas, and I take refuge in Samantabhadra and all World-Honored Ones. May I, along with all beings in the Dharma realm, completely purify all the heavy offenses created by the tongue.

> I repent the offenses of the body-root. Since beginningless time, my body-root has been unwholesome: greedily clinging to all kinds of sense-contact, upside-down in understanding, unable to see the truth, with afflictions blazing fiercely. It has given rise to the three kinds of unwholesome deeds — killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct — creating deep enmity with all beings. Even more, it has destroyed pagodas and ruined temples, burned and damaged scriptures and images, and misused the Three Jewels’ property without any sense of shame. Such offenses — limitless and boundless — born from bodily action, cannot be fully described. The Buddhas of the ten directions constantly emit pure light, illuminating everything. But my defiled, turbid body is obstructed, so I have not realized it. I only know how to crave coarse, disgusting objects of touch. Right now I experience all kinds of suffering; later I will fall into the hells, the animal realm, and the hungry ghost realm — all kinds of suffering. Sinking in them, I remain unaware and unconscious. Now, at last, I have awakened. I recite and uphold the true Dharma-treasure of the Great Vehicle. I take refuge in Samantabhadra and all World-Honored Ones. May all the heavy offenses created by the body-root — committed by myself and by all beings throughout the Dharma-realm — be utterly purified.

> I repent the offenses of the mind faculty. From beginningless time, my mind faculty has been unwholesome, greedily clinging to all phenomena, wild and ignorant without understanding. Following every object it encounters, it gives rise to greed, anger, and ignorance. I have experienced all the eight wrong views and the eight difficulties without exception. This mind faculty is the very root of all birth and death and the source of all suffering. As the sutra says, Shakyamuni is called Vairochana, who pervades all places. Know that all phenomena are exactly the Buddha's Dharma. Through deluded discrimination, I have suffered burning afflictions, thus seeing impurity in enlightenment and binding myself within liberation itself. Now I begin to realize this. I recite and uphold the great, complete Dharma Treasury, and take refuge in Universal Worthy and all World-Honored Ones. May I completely purify—from all the heavy offenses created by the mind faculty of all beings in the Dharma Realm, indeed all the boundless, countless evil deeds and obstructions arising from the six faculties that have already arisen, are arising now, or will arise in the future—may I cut off the continuity of this mind and become ultimately pure.

> "Now, to summarize the daily practice of the one hundred and eight types of buddha-work: one should simultaneously uphold both discipline and wisdom, practice both provisional and ultimate teachings, integrate essence and function, and realize the non-obstruction of principle and phenomena. I now cite the concluding verses from the \*Collection on the Return to the Myriad Good Deeds\* to demonstrate this perfect cultivation. The verse says:"

> Enlightenment is attained without deliberate effort; The Buddha path is sought without seeking. Wondrous practice is practiced without practicing; True wisdom is accomplished without accomplishing. Compassion arises from realizing the oneness of all beings; Loving-kindness is practiced by entering the unconditioned. Giving is performed without clinging; Precepts are upheld without grasping. Cultivation progresses without any arising; Endurance is mastered by realizing nothing to harm. Wisdom awakens to the unborn nature of objects; Meditation knows the mind has no fixed dwelling. Seeing no self yet manifesting all forms; Realizing speechless truth yet still teaching words. Build a Dharma hall like a reflection on water; Adorn a world that is inherently empty. Arrange offerings like illusions; Make offerings to Tathāgatas who are like shadows and echoes. Confess that sins are inherently empty; Invite the Dharma body to remain eternal. Dedicate merit without any attainment; Rejoice in virtue equal to Suchness. Praise the profound nothingness of self and other; Make vows where doer and done are equal. Prostrate before the assembly appearing like reflections; Walk the path treading on absolute emptiness. Burn incense to subtly reach the unborn; Recite sutras to deeply penetrate ultimate reality. Scatter flowers to symbolize non-attachment; Snap fingers to signal the removal of dust. Actions are like echoes opening the gateway to liberation; Cultivation gathers a myriad practices like flowers in the sky. Deeply enter the ocean of unborn nature; Roam freely in the Dharma gate of illusion. Vow to cut off defiled afflictions; Aspire to be born in the pure land of mind alone. Walk on the ground of ultimate reality; Enter and exit the gate of unobstructed contemplation. Subdue the armies of Mara, which are like mirror images; Perform great Buddha-work within a dream. Broadly save beings who are like illusions; Together realize the enlightened peace of Nirvana.
