> Postscript to Record of Self-Practice

> The mind is the root of all phenomena and the sacred home of wisdom. Yet, because of deep habits accumulated over countless lifetimes, its wondrous clarity has been obscured. Countless illusions and restless thoughts arise without end, causing beings to drown in the cycle of rebirth, enduring endless suffering, rising and falling without respite. How could this ever come to an end on its own? Now, people of the four assemblies have turned their hearts toward the Buddha's path. Although they rely on the wise teachings of the Buddha and the patriarchs to cultivate the true Dharma as a bridge to transcend the world, alas, their practice remains half-hearted, and their time is wasted. They fail to advance with courage and diligence, swiftly attaining supreme, perfect Enlightenment.

> Now, after reading the \*Record of Master Yongming's Personal Practice\*, which documents the one hundred and eight meritorious deeds he performed each day, we see how he upheld both practice and vows, benefiting both himself and others, without wasting a single moment. Only now can we truly see that Master Yongming was a reincarnation of an ancient Buddha—something that we, with our inferior and ordinary minds, dare not even aspire to. Now, in publishing this record, I only hope that fellow practitioners will stir up resolute determination and open their minds to profound insight. Do not be daunted by its vastness and retreat. Instead, measure your own strength, and from this record, select one or two practices, or thirty to fifty, and pursue them diligently day by day as your regular routine. Whatever you do, do not let laziness arise, nor let yourself be hot for a day and cold for ten—wasting your precious time. If you can truly do this, naturally your efforts will not be in vain. You will gradually progress deeper and deeper, broadening and strengthening your practice, until the supreme Enlightenment is attained unexpectedly, without even seeking it. But if you do not cultivate real practice, would you not be betraying the resolve that led you to renounce the home life and become a monk? I humbly pray that this record will spread far and wide. May all who see or hear it pursue the diligent practice of the ancient masters, fulfill the aspirations of their entire lives, and soon receive the prophecy of Buddhahood at Vulture Peak, liberating all sentient beings. This is my postscript. Written during the Daoguang era, on the day of the Buddha's Enlightenment in the twelfth lunar month.
