> Universal Encouragement to Recite Buddha's Name

> For those studying Buddhism: regardless of outward displays or formalities, the key lies in genuine practice. A layperson at home does not need to wear monastic robes or a Taoist headpiece; one with hair can simply wear ordinary clothes while reciting the Buddha's name. There is no need to strike the wooden fish or beat the drum; those who prefer stillness can silently recite the Buddha's name. There is no need to form groups or hold gatherings; those who avoid trouble can close their doors and recite the Buddha's name. There is no need to enter temples to hear sutras; those who are literate can follow the teachings and recite the Buddha's name on their own. Burning incense a thousand miles away is not as good as peacefully reciting the Buddha's name at home. Worshipping a false teacher is not as good as being filial to your parents and reciting the Buddha's name. Associating widely with demonic friends is not as good as staying alone in purity and reciting the Buddha's name. Accumulating wealth for the next life is not as good as creating merit and reciting the Buddha's name in this very life. Making vows and seeking protection is not as good as repenting, reforming, and reciting the Buddha's name. Studying the writings of heretical paths is not as good as reciting the Buddha's name without knowing a single character. Ignorantly and arrogantly discussing Zen principles is not as good as honestly upholding precepts and reciting the Buddha's name. Seeking supernatural powers from ghosts and spirits is not as good as having correct faith in cause and effect while reciting the Buddha's name. In short: discipline your mind and extinguish evil — reciting the Buddha's name in this way is called being a good person. Focus your mind and eliminate distraction — reciting the Buddha's name in this way is called being a virtuous person. Awaken your mind and sever delusion — reciting the Buddha's name in this way is called being a sage.

> Furthermore,

> Take this first piece of advice to heart: it's for those who have plenty of free time to recite the Buddha's name. Now that your children are married and your grandchildren are taking care of the family, you have no worries and plenty of leisure. This is exactly the right time to put your whole heart and energy into reciting the Buddha's name. Aim to recite it several thousand times a day—or even tens of thousands.

> I urge those who are neither fully busy nor fully idle to recite the Buddha's name. Their lives are only half-settled—sometimes occupied, sometimes at leisure. Though they are never completely free, they can still manage their tasks when busy and recite when at ease. Each day, chant several hundred times, or even several thousand times.

> A word for the extremely busy person who recites the Buddha's name: If you're consumed by official duties or racing to manage your household affairs, even without free time, you must steal a moment from your busy schedule to recite. Every morning, do ten recitations. Throughout the day, even if you only manage a few hundred recitations, that's still practice.
