### 示閱藏要語

> Instructions for Reading the Scriptures

大藏經所詮者。不過戒定慧而已。然閱藏者。二種過失。一者執文字而迷理致。二者識理致而不會心。徒廢光陰。祇成緣種耳。若能體達戒定慧熏修。則一大藏經教。所謂念念常住。即念百千萬億卷經者此也。亦復識此戒定慧。即是念佛法門何也。戒乃防非為義。若能一心念佛。諸惡不敢入。即戒也。定乃除散為義。若一心念佛。心不異緣。即定也。慧乃明照為義。若觀佛聲。字字分明。亦觀能念所念。皆不可得。即慧也。如是念佛。即是戒定慧也。何必隨文逐字。閱此藏經。光陰迅速。命不堅久。願諸人以淨業而為急務。甚勿以予言為非而弗聽也。

> The entire Buddhist canon is essentially about precepts, concentration, and wisdom. However, when reading the canon, people often fall into two errors: one is clinging to the words while losing sight of their deeper meaning; the other is grasping the meaning intellectually without truly realizing it in their hearts. This only wastes time and becomes merely the planting of karmic seeds. If you can embody and cultivate precepts, concentration, and wisdom through practice, then the entire scriptural teaching is present in every single thought, moment by moment. To "recite hundreds of thousands of sutra scrolls" means exactly this. Furthermore, recognize that these three—precepts, concentration, wisdom—are precisely the practice of mindful Buddha-recitation (nianfo). Why? Precepts mean to prevent wrongdoing. If you recite the Buddha's name with single-minded focus, no evil can enter. That is precepts. Concentration means to eliminate distraction. If you recite the Buddha's name with a one-pointed mind, not letting your thoughts wander elsewhere, that is concentration. Wisdom means clear illumination. If you observe the Buddha's name, word by word distinctly, and also see that the one who recites and the recitation itself are both ungraspable—that is wisdom. Thus, to recite the Buddha's name in this way is to embody precepts, concentration, and wisdom. Why then must you chase after each word and sentence, poring over the scriptures? Time passes quickly; life is not long or stable. I urge you all to make pure karma (rebirth in the Pure Land) your urgent priority. Please do not dismiss my words as mistaken and refuse to listen.
