> Reply to Scholar Xie Qinglian of Jiangxi

提話頭。是宗門發悟最緊切工夫。修淨土人。即以一聲佛號做箇話頭。此妙法也。但心麤氣浮。則未能相應。須是沉潛反照。至於力極勢窮。乃有因地一聲消息。

> Raise the \_huatou\_ (critical phrase)—this is the most urgent and direct method in the Chan school for awakening realization. Those who practice Pure Land should simply take a single recitation of the Buddha's name as their \_huatou\_. This is a wonderful method. However, if your mind is rough and your breath is scattered, you will not yet resonate with it. You must sink deep into self-reflection, until your strength is exhausted and your momentum runs out. Then, suddenly, there will be a breakthrough from the ground of your being.
