> Reply to Layman Xu Kuoru (Guangyue) of Deqing

> Now you ask about methods to gather the mind. Visualizations during sitting, standing, or imagined scenes—these all vary with circumstances and are not fixed. Simply maintain constant mindfulness of impermanence. This is not something those still entangled in worldly conditions can fully achieve. But even if you cannot be constantly mindful, that itself is still practice—do not worry. Furthermore, amid worldly entanglements, visualization practices are hard to succeed. Instead, just use whatever time you have from your studies or daily work to silently and steadfastly recite the Buddha's name. The key is to make each word clear and each phrase heartfelt. In this way, the mind naturally gathers itself. If you persist without backsliding and samadhi is achieved, then this very practice is true contemplation.
