> Reply to Layman Wu Boyang of Xiuning

楞嚴分別真妄處。曾不談及。觀想西方。執持名號等事。何為全沒干涉。而無風起浪。貶他是妄。若言妄則坐禪亦妄。持戒亦妄。講經亦妄。乃至得菩提入涅槃亦妄。可自一心念佛。莫生疑也。

> The \*Shurangama Sutra\* makes a clear distinction between what is true and what is illusory, yet it never once discusses visualizing the Western Pure Land or reciting the Buddha's name. Why then do you stir up waves where there is no wind, dismissing these practices as false? If you claim they are false, then sitting in meditation is also false—upholding precepts is false, giving Dharma talks is false, and even attaining enlightenment and entering nirvana is false. Simply focus your mind on reciting the Buddha's name and let go of your doubts.
