> Reply to Layman Zhang Xingyuan on Extensive Sutras

所問雲門語。不須究。他說教外別傳。只看他說。須退步向自己脚跟下。推尋是箇甚麼道理。其推尋今亦不難。既信念佛。但內看念佛的是誰。便是脚跟下推尋也。久之則正訛中所云。最後窮元極微一叚事。不患其不得矣。

> You ask about the Yunmen koan—there's no need to investigate it. He speaks of a special transmission outside the teachings. Just pay attention to what he says: you must step back and search beneath your own feet to see what principle is at work. This searching is not difficult to do now. Since you already believe in reciting the Buddha's name, just look inward and ask, "Who is the one reciting?" That is precisely the search beneath your own feet. If you keep this up over time, then concerning what the text \*Correcting Errors\* calls "the ultimate, subtle matter at the very root," you need not worry about failing to attain it.
