> Reply to Prefect Qian Yangchun: Universal Compassion

> Question: This mind has been scattered and unrestrained for so long. Even when I use mindfulness of the Buddha to hold it in place, it gets lost again after a short while. How should I maintain it?

> Answer: The land that has long been lost cannot be regained through a single battle. It requires firm courage and unwavering perseverance, waiting until the mind-ground opens and becomes clear, naturally achieving once and for all.

> Question: When the mind is tightly focused, it gradually grows drowsy and dull. When alerted and stirred awake, it then becomes scattered and distracted again. How can one tame and master this?

> Answer. Stillness remedies scattered thoughts, but when scattering ceases, drowsiness arises. Alertness remedies drowsiness, but when drowsiness fades, scattered thoughts arise. When both calmness and insight are held together, drowsiness and scattering both retreat. Now you only need to recite the Buddha's name with clarity and focus. When the mind recites without a second thought, this is "focus" (clarity). When reciting while turning awareness inward, this is "luminosity." Focus is calmness; luminosity is insight. In a single recitation of the Buddha's name, both calmness and insight are complete.

> Question: In the Seven Places Where the Mind Is Sought, the mind is found neither inside, outside, nor in between. The Second Patriarch asked for his mind to be pacified, but when told the mind is ungraspable, he was said to have "found peace of mind." This realm is beyond that of ordinary beings. Now, if I wish to dwell in the mindfulness of direct encounter, how should I proceed?

> Just respond. Don’t worry about this place or that place. Don’t worry about being at ease or uneasy. Don’t worry about facing others or not. Simply focus your mind entirely on reciting the Buddha’s name. As the ancients said: “Press straight on toward the supreme enlightenment; let go of all disputes about right and wrong.”

> Question: If all worldly occupations and businesses are ultimately in harmony with true reality, then why does the Buddhist vow of universal compassion, which renounces even a strand of hair or a speck of skin, conflict with the profit-driven mindset of business? How can we reconcile these two?

> Answer: If you always uphold the highest truth, not only do daily tasks and livelihood not conflict with ultimate reality, but even killing, stealing, lust, and lying have never truly gone against it. Looking at it from the worldly perspective, everyday affairs operate according to common worldly principles, which also do not hinder the path. However, those who deceive others for personal gain are truly unacceptable.
