> Question: "If one attains single-minded focus (一心不亂) for one to seven days, immediate rebirth is achieved. But if one maintains this focus only during those one to seven days, yet loses it afterward, can rebirth still be attained?"

> Answer: Once you have achieved single-minded concentration, your mind will only wander slightly, never into deep distraction. Consider the example of Yan Hui, who could abide in benevolence without wavering for three months. Does that mean he turned into a bad person after that period? For a person of this caliber, even if a stray thought arises in the mind, it vanishes instantly—like a speck of snow landing on a red-hot stove, melted before it even touches the surface. So how could such a thought truly be considered "arising"?

> Question: As for people who do not believe in the Pure Land, I fear it is simply because their inherent merit is thin.

> Yes, that’s right. What you said is very true.
