### 人天路上作福為先　生死海中念佛第一

> Best to Cultivate Merit on the Path to Humanity and Heaven, Best to Recite the Buddha's Name in the Sea of Birth and Death

人間天上。快樂逍遙。皆因廣作諸福。最緊最要。故曰為先。若欲高出人天。速超生死。者登不退。則有念佛往生一門。最尊最勝。故曰第一。偈曰。作福不念佛。福盡還沉淪。念佛不作福。入道多苦辛。無福不念佛。地獄鬼畜羣。念佛兼作福。後證兩足尊。

> In the human world and heavenly realms, joy and freedom come from performing many good deeds—this is the most crucial and paramount practice, thus it is said to come first. If one wishes to rise above humans and gods, quickly transcend birth and death, and attain the stage of non-retrogression, there is the path of mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha for rebirth in the Pure Land—this is the most honored and supreme, thus it is said to be foremost. A verse says: Cultivating merit without mindful recitation, When merit is spent, you sink once more. Mindful recitation without cultivating merit, On the path you face much hardship and distress. Without merit and recitation both, Hell, hungry ghosts, and beasts are your lot. But with recitation and merit combined, You will later realize the Two-Fully-Adorned One.
