### 六齋月齋圖說

> Illustration and Explanation of the Six and Monthly Fasting Days

六齋　每月六日。初八。十四。十五。二十三。二十九。三十。如遇月小。二十八。二十九。當持日齋。

> The Six Days of Observance fall on the 8th, 14th, 15th, 23rd, 29th, and 30th of each lunar month. In months with only 29 days, the days of observance shift to the 28th and 29th. On these specific days, one should practice the daytime fast and maintain mindfulness.

月齋　每年正。五。九。三箇月。當持月齋。不能三月持齋。必須三月戒殺。

> Monthly Fasting Periods. In the first, fifth, and ninth months of each year, you should observe a monthly fast. If you cannot fast for all three months, you must at least observe the precept of refraining from killing during those three months.

經云。四天王每月六日。巡行南贍部洲。初八。二十三。使者巡。十四。二十九。太子巡。十五。三十。天王親巡。考察人間。何人孝順父母。何人忠報君王。何人正直公平。何人慈悲方便。何人歸依三寶。戒殺持齋。廣修眾善。如是等人。加福增壽。何人忤逆父母。何人。背叛君王。何人欺詐姦巧。何人剛狠暴虐。何人不信三寶。宰殺生命。廣造諸惡。如是等人。削福滅壽。又正。五。九月。天王分鎮南州。考察罪福。又玉皇天帝。正。五。九月。以大寶鏡正照南州。考察罪福。可不懼哉。可不慎哉。此六日此三月。應當齋戒念佛。懺悔修省。其日念佛。或六百或六千記點一圈。每月六圈。可用二載。若不能月齋。必守六齋。倘更日日持齋。日日念佛。日日修德。大善大善。

> The sutra states: Each month, the Four Heavenly Kings inspect Jambudvīpa on six specific days. On the 8th and 23rd, their messengers make the rounds. On the 14th and 29th, the princes carry out the inspection. On the 15th and 30th, the kings themselves descend to observe. They examine humanity: Who is filial to their parents? Who is loyal to their ruler? Who is upright and fair? Who is compassionate and skillful in helping others? Who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels, refrains from killing, observes vegetarian precepts, and cultivates many good deeds? To such people, they grant increased blessings and longer life. Who is rebellious toward parents? Who betrays their ruler? Who is deceitful, dishonest, or cunning? Who is cruel, violent, and abusive? Who does not believe in the Three Jewels, kills living beings, and commits many evils? For such people, they reduce their blessings and shorten their lives. Additionally, during the first, fifth, and ninth months of the lunar calendar, the Heavenly Kings personally reside over the southern continent, examining merits and faults. Furthermore, the Jade Emperor, in these same three months, shines his great precious mirror directly upon the southern continent to investigate both good and evil. How can we not be reverent? How can we not be cautious? On these six days and during these three months, we should observe precepts, recite the Buddha's name, practice repentance, and reflect on our conduct. When reciting on these days, chant the Buddha's name either six hundred or six thousand times, marking one dot per cycle. Complete six cycles each month. In two years, this practice will be fulfilled. If you cannot observe the monthly precepts, you should at least keep the six daily precepts. Even better—if you can maintain daily precepts, recite daily, and cultivate virtue every single day—that is truly great and excellent!
