> Reciting the Buddha's name several hundred thousand times in total.

> When ordinary people lose a beloved family member, they are overcome with grief. Yet this sorrow neither helps the departed nor harms the bereaved. It is better to set aside mourning and focus on helping the deceased through spiritual practice. The scriptures say that after death, a person is reborn within forty-nine days. This is precisely the time to perform virtuous deeds. Now I recommend that in addition to inviting monks to chant sutras, you also add your own recitation of the Buddha's name. Chant 1,500 times daily. If you have more energy, increase to 2,000, 3,000, or even 4,000 times. Record the total each day in the spaces below. After the full forty-nine days, dedicate the merit and burn the record. This can eliminate the deceased's karmic obstacles, resolve their past grievances, help them be reborn in a higher realm, and prevent them from lingering in the dark path. This practice is for all who wish to repay kindness: filial children remembering their parents, loving parents thinking of their children, siblings, spouses, family members, teachers, students, and friends. If you have just lost someone and have not yet seen this guide, you can also recite 108,000 times—or any number you choose—to dedicate the merit to the deceased afterward. The blessings gained are immeasurable.
