### 普勸為人必修淨土

天如淨土或問云。今禪者見修淨土。鄙之為愚夫愚婦。此非鄙愚夫愚婦也。乃鄙文殊。普賢。馬鳴。龍樹也。其言痛切如此。猶有未信者。因為考據。以證不妄○觀佛三昧經。文殊菩薩偈云。願我命終時。滅除諸障礙。面見彌陀佛。往生安樂剎。△華嚴行願品。普賢菩薩偈云。願我臨欲命終時。盡除一切諸障礙。面見彼佛阿彌陀。即得往生安樂剎△起信論。馬鳴菩薩示最勝方便。謂專意念佛。即得往生。終無有退△楞伽經。佛告大慧。大名德比邱。厥號為龍樹。得初歡喜地。往生安樂國。以上略舉四大菩薩。其餘菩薩修淨土者。不可勝紀○廬山遠法師。悟摩訶般若深旨。號東方護法菩薩。而六時念佛。三覩聖像。往生淨土△天台智者大師。妙悟法華。一家教觀。萬代宗祖。而生即面西。辯十種疑。疏十六觀。極談淨土△百丈大師。馬祖傳道嫡子。天下叢林共宗。而祈禱病僧。化送亡僧。悉歸淨土△清涼國師。紹華嚴祖位。稱文殊後身。而指示彌陀。即盧舍那。亦疏。觀經。宏揚淨土△永明壽禪師。得無礙辯才。柱石宗門。而作四料簡。徧贊西方。上上品生。敬及冥府△死心新禪師。繼席黃龍。宗風大振。而切意淨業。著勸念佛文令人發哀起信△真歇了禪師。嗣丹霞淳公洞下一宗。至師大顯。而卓庵補陀專意西方。有淨土集行世△慈受深禪師。大󳬛倩女因緣。一偈融通五教。而謂修行捷徑。無越淨󳬛。建西方道場。苦口勸眾△圓照本禪師。道續天衣。宗宏雪竇。法雷振地。師表兩朝。而淨業兼修。標名上品△中峯本禪師。得法高峯老人。學者仰如山斗。而云禪者。淨土之禪。淨土者禪之淨土。有懷淨土詩百首。勸人念佛。以上略舉十大尊宿。其餘尊宿。及法師。律師。修淨土者。不可勝紀○阿彌陀經△大無量壽經△十六親經△鼓音王經△天親往生論。以上略舉專說淨土經論。其餘經論帶說淨土者。不可勝紀○道安往生論△懷感羣疑論△慈恩通贊△海東彌陀疏△四明妙宗鈔△慈恩懺願儀△草堂寶王論△孤山刊正記。西資鈔△大智觀經疏△優曇蓮宗寶鑑△石資樂󳬛文類△天如淨土或問△大佑淨土指歸△鏡道二師念佛鏡△道衍善人咏△西齋淨土詩。以上略舉最顯數家。其餘贊揚淨土者。不可勝紀。願一一考其人。閱其言。思其義。斷疑決志。幸甚幸甚。

> Tianru’s \*Questions on the Pure Land\* states: “When Chan practitioners see others cultivating the Pure Land method, they dismiss them as foolish men and women. But this is not merely dismissing the foolish—it is dismissing Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Ashvaghosha, and Nagarjuna. His words are so earnest, yet some still refuse to believe. Therefore, I will compile evidence to prove this is no empty claim.” - \*\*The Sutra on the Samadhi of Contemplating the Buddha\*\* includes a verse by Manjushri Bodhisattva: “May I, at the end of my life, remove all hindrances, face Amitabha Buddha, and be reborn in the blissful land.” - \*\*The Avatamsaka Sutra, Chapter on Good Conduct and Vows\*\* has a verse by Samantabhadra Bodhisattva: “May I, at the moment of death, completely eliminate all obstacles, see Amitabha Buddha face to face, and immediately be reborn in the blissful land.” - \*\*The Awakening of Faith\*\* teaches the most excellent expedient method by Ashvaghosha Bodhisattva: by single-mindedly reciting the Buddha's name, one will be reborn in the Pure Land without ever backsliding. - \*\*The Lankavatara Sutra\*\* records the Buddha telling Mahamati: “The great monk of renowned virtue, named Nagarjuna, will attain the first stage of joy and be reborn in the land of peace.” These are just a few examples of four great Bodhisattvas. The number of other Bodhisattvas who cultivated the Pure Land method is countless. - \*\*Master Huiyuan of Lushan\*\* deeply realized the profound meaning of the Prajnaparamita and was called the “Dharma-protecting Bodhisattva of the East.” Yet he chanted the Buddha's name at six intervals throughout the day, saw the sacred image three times, and was reborn in the Pure Land. - \*\*Venerable Master Zhiyi of Tiantai\*\* marvelously awakened to the Lotus Sutra and became the patriarch of the Tiantai tradition for all generations. Yet he faced west at birth, clarified ten types of doubt, commented on the Sixteen Contemplations Sutra, and profoundly expounded on the Pure Land. - \*\*Master Baizhang\*\*, the direct Dharma heir of Mazu and revered by all monasteries, prayed for sick monks and conducted funeral services—all dedicated to rebirth in the Pure Land. - \*\*National Teacher Qingliang\*\*, who inherited the Huayan lineage and was considered a reincarnation of Manjushri, taught that Amitabha is Vairochana. He also commented on the Contemplation Sutra and widely promoted the Pure Land. - \*\*Master Yongming Yanshou\*\*, who possessed unobstructed eloquence and was a pillar of the Chan school, wrote the \*Four Alternative Summaries\*, universally praising the Western Land. He attained the highest grade of rebirth, even earning respect in the underworld. - \*\*Master Sixin Xin\*\*, who succeeded the Huanglong line and revived the Chan tradition, earnestly practiced Pure Land cultivation. He wrote essays urging people to recite the Buddha's name, inspiring faith and awakening. - \*\*Master Zhenxie Liao\*\*, who continued the Caodong tradition from Master Danxia, greatly expanded the school. He built a hermitage at Mount Putuo, focused solely on the Western Land, and left behind a \*Collection on the Pure Land\*. - \*\*Master Cishou Shen\*\*, who became enlightened through the story of the beautiful woman and a single verse integrating all five teachings, taught that the fastest path to enlightenment was no other than the Pure Land. He established a Western practice center and earnestly urged everyone to practice. - \*\*Master Yuanzhao Ben\*\*, who continued the Tiantai tradition and revived the Yunmen school, was a teacher for two imperial courts. He also cultivated Pure Land practice and achieved rebirth in the highest grade. - \*\*Master Zhongfeng Ben\*\*, who received the Dharma from Elder Gaofeng and was respected like a mountain by students, taught: “Chan is the Chan of the Pure Land; the Pure Land is the Pure Land of Chan.” He composed one hundred poems on the Pure Land, encouraging people to recite the Buddha's name. These are just a few examples of ten great elder masters.
