> Record of Enshrining Amitabha's Sacred Image at the Hall of Incense Light

> Cloud Perch donated a standing statue of Amitabha, who welcomes beings. The lay practitioner Benru, seeing its dignified and exquisite form, asked me to have craftsmen carve a copy. Just as it was finished, his second son came from Tongcheng to receive it. Fearing damage during transport as the gold lacquer had not yet fully hardened, I had the original statue sent instead, while the new one remained in the mountain. The younger son brought the statue to North Pass, where he sought a boat. The boatman had dreamed the night before of a golden man asking for passage. Upon waking, he waited for this person, convinced it must be a very noble one. He refused all inquiries—refusing the son as well—until he learned about the sacred statue. When he discovered it was a standing image, he was overjoyed, finding it matched his dream. At Jingkou, they needed to change boats to enter the river, and that boatman also had the same dream. Soon the statue arrived home and was enshrined in the Fragrant Light Chamber. Fearing there was no virtuous monk to guard it, the monk Dahai arrived just then—a man who strictly observed the pure precepts and never stepped beyond the temple gate. After seven years, he knew his time was near, bid farewell to the lay practitioner, and passed away sitting on the first day of the seventh month. Many people near and far were moved and transformed by him. After Dahai's passing, again there was concern about finding a successor. Then Huiguang appeared. Huiguang was a companion in virtue to Dahai. Now, is it not remarkable that the boatmen dreamed? And that dreams came repeatedly? It was difficult to first obtain Dahai, and then Huiguang followed—how much more remarkable! To have both is unprecedented. The cause was Amitabha's majestic power, and what moved that majestic power was the lay practitioner's sincerity. The Shurangama Sutra says: "When you recollect the Buddha and think of the Buddha, in the present or the future, you will certainly see the Buddha." It also says: "Like a person who perfumes clothing with incense, their body carries the fragrance—this is called the Adornment of Fragrant Light." One could say that here, seeing the Buddha does not wait for the future; the Fragrant Light has already become an adornment. I have gathered these events in order and recorded them.
