> Exhortation on the Four Simples

作福不念佛 福盡還沉淪 念佛不作福八道多苦辛 無福不念佛 地獄鬼畜羣念佛兼作福 後證兩足尊

> Without planting merit while chanting Buddha's name, When merit's gone, one sinks back into worldly woes. Chanting Buddha's name without planting merit, The Eightfold Path brings hardship and much toil. Without merit and without chanting Buddha, One falls among the ghosts, beasts, and hell's hosts. Chanting Buddha's name and also planting merit, One later attains the Twofold Perfect One.
