### 念佛鬼敬

> Reciting Buddha's Name, Ghosts Revere

海昌村民某。有老媼死。附家人。言平生事。及陰府報應。甚悉家人環而聽之。某在眾中。忽攝心念佛媼謂曰。汝常如此。何患不成佛道。問何故。曰。汝心念阿彌陀佛。故問何以知之。曰。見汝身有光明故。村民不識一字。瞥爾顧念。尚使鬼敬。況久修者乎。是故念佛功德不可思議。

> In a coastal village, there was a villager whose elderly mother had passed away. Her spirit possessed a family member, recounting her life events and the judgments in the underworld with such clarity that the whole family gathered around to listen. While the villager stood among them, he suddenly focused his mind on reciting the Buddha's name. The spirit said to him, "If you always practice like this, why worry about not attaining enlightenment?" When asked why, she replied, "Because in your heart, you're reciting 'Amida Buddha'." When asked how she knew, she said, "Because I can see light surrounding your body." This villager was illiterate, yet just by spontaneously turning his mind to this practice, he earned the respect of even a spirit. How much more so for those who have practiced long and consistently? Thus, the merit of reciting the Buddha's name is truly inconceivable.
