> Taking Suffering as Happiness

> Consider the insects that live in a latrine. From the perspective of a dog or a sheep, their existence seems unbearably miserable. Yet the insects themselves do not feel this suffering; they actually think they are quite comfortable. Now consider the dogs and sheep grazing in the field. From a human perspective, their lives also seem full of hardship. But the dogs and sheep do not feel this hardship; they too believe they are living a good life. And finally, consider human beings living in this world. From the perspective of heavenly beings, our lives are filled with suffering. Yet we humans do not recognize this suffering; we think we are content. If we extend this logic further, even the joys and sorrows of the heavenly realms follow the same pattern. Once we truly understand this, our determination to be reborn in the Pure Land becomes so strong that ten thousand oxen could not pull us back.
