### 念佛

> Reciting the Buddha's Name

世人稍利根。便輕視念佛。謂是愚夫愚婦勾當。彼徒見愚夫愚婦。口誦佛名。心遊千里。而不知此等是名讀佛。非念佛也。念從心。心思憶而不忘。故名曰念。言以儒喻。儒者念念思憶孔子。其去孔子不亦庶幾乎。今念念思憶五欲。不以為非。而反以念佛為非。噫。似此一生空過。何如作愚夫愚婦耶。而惜乎智可能也。愚不可能也。

> Even people with sharp faculties often look down on Buddha-name recitation, dismissing it as something only for simple, uneducated folks. They see such people chanting the Buddha’s name aloud while their minds wander a thousand miles away, unaware that this is merely "reading the Buddha," not "reciting the Buddha." True recitation comes from the mind—it means constantly remembering without forgetting. That is why it is called "recitation." To use a Confucian analogy: a scholar who constantly keeps Confucius in mind will draw closer to him. But today, people constantly dwell on sensual pleasures without seeing anything wrong with it, yet condemn the practice of recollecting the Buddha. What a pity! Spending an entire life this way—how much better it would be to be one of those simple, uneducated folk! For it is a shame: wisdom—anyone can have it, but a simple, sincere heart? That is far beyond most.
