> Repentance Ceremony for Monastics

> A practitioner of the Pure Land Repentance method once asked a monk: "Doesn't the sutra say, 'If you wish to repent, sit upright and contemplate true reality'? Why then this frantic bowing and scraping?" The monk replied: "If you want to repent, sit upright and contemplate true reality. What's with all this fussing about and rushing to bow?" The practitioner asked: "What is true reality?" The monk said: "When the mind does not give rise to delusions, that is true reality." The practitioner then asked: "What is the mind? What are delusions? And what is it that can control the mind?" The monk had no answer. The practitioner said: "I have heard that repentance takes principle as its foundation and action as its support. Even while contemplating true reality, fervent effort in body, speech, and thought is not contradictory. Why? Because beginners, who have not yet fully awakened to true reality, need the aid of external conditions. The Lotus Sutra says, 'I use various skillful means to help reveal the ultimate truth.' The Awakening of Faith also states that practitioners in the final age, fearing they may not often encounter a Buddha, follow the Buddha’s skillful teaching to recite the Buddha's name and seek rebirth in the Pure Land. Thus we know that Master Ciyun's Pure Land Repentance method, which harmonizes ancient and modern practice, is extremely precise. Like the Lotus and Shining Light repentance methods, it perfectly combines both principle and practice—revered by both gods and humans, a great torch lighting the dark path of the final age. Furthermore, does the Buddha say that even mundane work and production are not contrary to true reality?" The monk replied: "Yes." The practitioner said: "Then how could performing repentance be less worthy than mundane work?" The monk had no answer.
