### 念佛不專一

> Mindfulness of Buddha Without Single-Minded Focus

予昔在鍊磨場中。時方丈謂眾云。中元曰當作盂蘭盆齊。予以為設供也。俄而無設。唯念佛三日而已。又聞昔有院主為官司所勾攝。堂中第一座。集眾救護眾以為持誦也。亦高聲念佛而已。此二事。逈出常情。有大人作略。真可師法。彼今之念佛者。名為專修。至於禱壽命。則藥師經。解罪愆。則梁皇懺。濟厄難。則消災呪。求智慧。則觀音文。向所念佛。束之高閣。若無補於事者。不思彼佛壽命無量。況百年壽命乎。不思念彼佛能滅八十億劫生死重罪。況目前罪垢厄。難乎。不思彼佛言我以知慧光。廣照無央界。況時人所稱智慧乎。阿伽陀藥。萬病總持。二三其心。莫肯信服。神聖工巧。獨且奈之何哉。

> In the past, when I was at a cultivation center, the abbot said to the assembly, "On the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, we will hold the Ullambana ceremony." I assumed this meant making offerings. But before long, there were no offerings—only three days of reciting the Buddha’s name. I also heard that once, when a temple administrator was arrested by officials, the head monk gathered everyone for protection. Everyone thought they would recite scriptures, but instead they simply chanted the Buddha’s name aloud. These two events stand far apart from ordinary expectations. They reflect the conduct of a great person and are truly worthy of imitation. Today, those who practice Buddha-recitation claim to do so single-mindedly. Yet when they pray for long life, they turn to the Medicine Master Sutra; when they seek forgiveness of transgressions, they use the Emperor Liang Repentance; when they need relief from adversity, they recite the Disaster-Eliminating Dharani; when they desire wisdom, they chant the Guanyin text. Meanwhile, the very Buddha they once recited is set aside, as if useless. How can they not reflect? That Buddha possesses immeasurable life—why be concerned with a mere hundred years? That Buddha can eradicate the heavy transgressions of eighty billion kalpas of birth and death—why worry about present faults and calamities? That Buddha declares, "With my wisdom light, I broadly illuminate countless realms"—what need is there for what people nowadays call "wisdom"? Agada medicine cures all diseases. But with a divided mind, unwilling to truly believe and take it, even the most skilled divine healers can do nothing.
