### 鴈蕩山

> Yandang Mountain

台鴈號兩浙名山。而鴈蕩尤奇有。輕千里裹糧而往遊者予昔應太平之請。去鴈蕩僅一由旬。期滿院主白予為鴈蕩遊。予欲往。而忻然從遊者百餘眾。因計彼山久無接待。徘徊歷覧。往返不下半月費粟數石。院貧不能支遂堅執己之。眾怏怏。乃慰之曰。鴈蕩之勝。在震旦中。尚有過之者。即震旦最勝處。不及天宮天宮展轉最勝處。不及西方極樂。世界。公等不慕極樂。而沾沾鴈蕩是慕。也竟不去。

> Mt. Yan stands as a renowned holy mountain in the Zhejiang region, and its Yandang Peak is especially extraordinary. In the past, some traveled a thousand miles carrying provisions just to visit it. When I accepted the invitation from Taiping, I was merely a \*yojana\* away from Yandang. When my term there ended, the temple abbot urged me to make a pilgrimage to Yandang. I was eager to go, and over a hundred people joyfully joined me. But then I considered that the mountain had long lacked facilities for pilgrims. The round trip would take at least half a month, costing several \*shi\* of grain. The temple was too poor to support this, so I firmly decided to cancel the trip. The group was disappointed, so I comforted them: "The beauty of Yandang ranks among the finest in Jambudvipa, yet there are places that surpass it. Even the most spectacular sites in Jambudvipa cannot compare to the heavenly palaces; and the most magnificent heavenly palaces cannot compare to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. You all do not aspire to the Pure Land, yet you cling so eagerly to Yandang." In the end, we never went.
