真誥云。鮑勔未知道但朝暮扣齒不息鬼使不能取。蓋扣齒集身中之神。神不離。故鬼不得近。向使以扣齒之力修真。何真之不成。予謂豈獨修真。以扣齒之力。念念扣已而參。何佛之不成乎。夫身中之神。秪是一精魂耳。力尚。伏鬼。況經云。受持一佛名者有百千大力天神為之擁護。又云。念佛之人。佛在其頂。今也勤為扣齒之細故。而甘捨念佛之大道惜哉。

> According to the \*Zhen'gao\*, Bao Qin, though not yet aware of the Way, would click his teeth unceasingly from morning to night. As a result, the ghostly emissaries could not seize him. For clicking the teeth brings together the spirits within one's body; when these spirits do not disperse, ghosts cannot draw near. If one were to use this same effort of tooth-clicking to cultivate truth—how could truth not be achieved? I say: Why only cultivating truth? If one were to use this same effort of tooth-clicking to click inward, turning the mind back (nian nian) upon oneself and investigating, how could Buddhahood not be achieved? Now, the spirits within the body are merely a single essence of soul. Yet their power can still subdue ghosts. How much more so when the sutras say: "One who holds a Buddha's name is protected by a hundred thousand great and powerful heavenly spirits." It also says: "The Buddha is above the head of one who recites the Buddha's name." Today, people diligently exert themselves over the trivial practice of tooth-clicking, yet willingly abandon the great path of nianfo (reciting the Buddha's name). What a pity!
