### 後身二

> Future Body<note>2</note>

或謂諸師後身之為名臣。猶醒醐反而為酥也。猶可也。為常人則酪矣。為女人則乳矣。乃至為惡人則毒藥矣。平生所修。果不足憑仗乎。則何貴於修乎。是大有說。凡修行人二力。一曰福力。堅持戒行。而作種種有為功德者是也。二曰道力。堅持正觀。而念念在般。若中者是也。純乎道力如靈樹者置弗論。道力勝福力。則處富貴而不迷。福力勝道力。則迷於富貴。固未可保也。於中貪欲重而為女人。貪嗔俱重而為惡人。則但修福力而道。力轉輕之故也。為僧者。究心於道力。宜何如也。雖然。倘勤修道力。而更助之以願力。得從於諸上善人之後。豈惟惡人。將名臣亦所不為矣。甚哉西方之不可不生也。

> Some say that when monks are reborn as renowned officials, it is like ghee turning back into butter—still acceptable. But if they become ordinary people, it is like curdled milk; if women, like milk; and if evil people, like poison. Does this mean that all their lifelong cultivation is unreliable? If so, what value does cultivation hold? There is much to say about this. For all practitioners, there are two kinds of power. The first is the power of merit: upholding precepts strictly and performing various virtuous deeds. The second is the power of the Way: steadfastly maintaining right view and dwelling in wisdom at every moment. Leaving aside those like the "Spirit Tree" monk who were purely guided by the power of the Way: when the power of the Way outweighs the power of merit, one may experience wealth and status without becoming deluded. When the power of merit outweighs the power of the Way, one becomes lost in wealth and status—there is no guarantee of stability. Among such cases, those with heavy greed are reborn as women, those with heavy greed and anger as evil people. This is because they cultivated only the power of merit while the power of the Way grew weak. For monastics, how should they focus on the power of the Way? Even so, if one diligently cultivates the power of the Way and further aids it with the power of vows, they may follow in the company of the noblest beings. In that case, not only would they avoid becoming evil people, they would not even wish to be renowned officials. How essential it is, then, to be reborn in the Pure Land!
