> Future Life

> Han Qinhu said: "Born as a pillar of the state, died as King Yama." This was considered an honor. What people don’t realize is that although King Yama enjoys the status of a king, he also undergoes suffering twice a day. This position is held by beings with a mixture of merit and fault—it’s hardly a good thing. Long ago, there was a monk who saw a spirit messenger arrive. When he asked where they were going, the messenger replied, "To fetch you to become King Yama." The monk was terrified and immediately focused his mind with pure intent. As a result, the messenger never returned. The ancients said that a monk who hasn’t awakened to the true nature of mind will often end up as a spirit of water or land. While this isn’t always the case, it certainly can happen. Even a rebirth among humans is better than being in the heavenly realms. But if even heaven is not worth pursuing, how much less the realm of ghosts and spirits? How vital, then, it is to be reborn in the Western Pure Land!
