### 參究念佛

> Investigating Buddha Recitation

國朝洪永間。有空谷。天奇。毒峯。三大老其論念佛。天毒二師。俱教人看念佛是誰。唯空谷謂只直念去。亦有悟門。此二各隨機宜。皆是也。而空谷但言直念亦可。不曰參究為非也。予於疏鈔。已略陳之。而猶有疑者。謂參究主於見性。單持乃切往生。遂欲廢參究而事單持。言經中止云執持名號。曾無參究之說。此論亦甚有理。依而行之決定往生。但欲存此廢彼。則不可葢念佛人見性。正上品上生事。而反憂其不生耶。故。疏鈔兩存而待擇。請無疑焉。若夫以誰字逼氣下行。而謂是追究念佛者。此邪謬誤人。獲罪無量。

> During the early Ming Dynasty, in the Hongwu and Yongle eras, there were three great elder masters: Konggu, Tianqi, and Dufeng. Regarding the practice of reciting the Buddha's name, both Tianqi and Dufeng taught people to contemplate, "Who is reciting the Buddha's name?" Only Konggu said that simply reciting the name continuously could also lead to awakening. These are both valid methods, depending on the student's disposition. Konggu did not say that other methods are wrong; he only said direct recitation is acceptable. In my commentary "Shu Chao," I have briefly discussed this. Yet some still have doubts, claiming that contemplation aims at seeing one's true nature, while single-minded recitation is for rebirth in the Pure Land. They then want to abandon contemplation and only practice recitation, arguing that the sutra only says to "hold the name" and does not mention contemplation. This argument has some reason to it, and following it will certainly lead to rebirth. However, to accept one and reject the other is not appropriate. For one who recites the Buddha's name and sees their true nature is exactly taking the highest grade of rebirth. Why worry that such a person will not be reborn? Therefore, my commentary keeps both methods, leaving them for practitioners to choose. Please do not be confused. As for the erroneous practice of forcing the breath downward while focusing on the word "who" and calling this the investigation of the Buddha-name reciter, this is a mistaken teaching that misleads people and incurs boundless offenses.
