> Mindfulness of Buddha Does Not Hinder Chan/Zen Meditation

> It is said in the past that Chan meditation does not hinder Pure Land recitation, and Pure Land recitation does not hinder Chan meditation. It is also said that one should not mix the two practices. However, there have been Chan practitioners who also cultivated the Pure Land method. For example, masters such as Yuan Zhao Ben, Zhen Xie Liao, Yong Ming Shou, Huang Long Xin, and Ci Shou Shen were all great Chan adepts, yet they focused on Pure Land without it obstructing their Chan practice. Therefore, one who practices Chan, although contemplating one’s own true nature in every thought, may still make a vow to be reborn in the Pure Land at the end of life. Why is this? Even if a Chan practitioner attains some insight, if they cannot dwell in the eternal, tranquil light as the Buddhas do, or be free from further rebirth like an Arhat, then after this present life, they will have a place of rebirth. Would it not be better to be reborn in a lotus flower, close to Amitabha Buddha, than to be reborn among humans and have the opportunity to follow an enlightened teacher? Thus, reciting the Buddha’s name does not hinder Chan meditation—it is, in fact, beneficial for Chan practice.
