### 得悟人正宜往生淨土

> For those who awaken, Pure Land rebirth is the right path.

或問某甲向修淨土。有禪者曰。但悟自佛即已。何必外求他佛而願往生。此意何如。予謂此實最上開示。但執之亦能有悞。請以喻明。假使有人。頴悟同於顏子。而百里千里之外。有聖如夫子者。倡道於其間。七十子。三千賢。相與周旋焉。汝聞其名。往而見之。未必不更有長處而自恃頴悟。拒不覲謁。可乎。雖然得悟。不願往生。敢保老兄未悟在。何者。天如有言。汝但未悟。若悟。則汝淨土之生。萬牛不能挽矣。深矣哉言乎。

> Someone asked: "I have been practicing Pure Land recitation. A Chan practitioner said, 'Just realize your own inherent Buddha-nature, that is enough. Why seek an external Buddha and vow to be reborn in the Pure Land?' What do you think of this?" I replied: This is truly the highest teaching. But clinging to it rigidly can also lead to mistakes. Let me explain with a metaphor. Suppose there is a person as intelligent as Yan Hui, but hundreds or thousands of miles away, a sage like Confucius is spreading the Way. He is surrounded by seventy disciples and three thousand students, all learning and growing together. Upon hearing of Confucius' reputation, this person goes to see him. Would it be wrong for him, relying on his own intelligence, to refuse to pay respects? Even if he is enlightened, if he is unwilling to seek rebirth in the Pure Land, I dare say that he is not truly enlightened. Why? As the Buddha said: "If you were truly enlightened, not even ten thousand oxen could drag you away from the Pure Land." Profound words, indeed!
